I've long wondered what the backstory is on these things. Another fascinating item is a 6000-year old Iron pillar in India - it's made from 100% elementally pure Iron which is extraaaaaaordinarily difficult to do even with todays metallurgical technology. It's impossible to extract all trace amounts of other elemental metals from iron through known foundry processes. You can oxidize iron (turn it to rust), & then chemically treat it to isolate pure iron, but that's supposedly beyond the expertise of ancient peoples. Even meteorites known for their extraordinarily high concentrations of elemental iron have trace quantities of other metals. One final interesting & little-known fact - pure elemental iron never rusts. The corrosion process requires other elements alloyed into iron to act as a catalyst. |
