Ok, So its not the flu people. It's a novel Coronavirus.

So far the death toll has been quite limited. But there was just a case reported in Japan. MERS and SARS are Coronaviruses and they had 30% and 10% fatality rates.

That said...Viruses do evolve and adapt and can become more lethal and transmit more easily as time goes on.

The Lunar New Years celebrations are this time of year and draw tons of tourists throughout the region. Things could get interesting.

For now though we still don't know much about the virus but it is certainly something to keep an eye out for. International travel could take this things worldwide in 36 hours. We are definitely overdue for the next pandemic though. Dismissing this or other viruses as threats is ill advised as eventually they will hit the lottery and shit will hit the fan EVERYWHERE.

Is it through fear I wear a seat belt when driving a car?

While the extent of the threat is still poorly defined, and there are no guarantees that we are on the verge of something `big', the world's global public health agencies (WHO, CDC, ECDC, CHP, etc.) are proceeding with justifiable caution and concern as the 2019 - Novel Coronavirus has now been detected in two other countries (Thailand & Japan).
Overnight we've seen both Hong Kong and Macao announce new, more stringent measures to deal with the potential threat, and this morning the ECDC has published their epidemiological and clinical criteria for testing suspect cases, and a guide to specimen collection.
All of this - while precautionary at this point - is absolutely imperative, else we risk being caught flat-footed should this outbreak expand. And if this novel coronavirus turns out to not be quite ready for prime time, anything we do now prepares us better for the next threat that will surely emerge.

Some fine day this scenario will unfold. Government actions to contain it will be too late--a killer virus will escape all around the globe within a week or two. The Fandango Rangers will be helpless.
