It makes for some creepy storytelling, though. Less forensic science back then..... Noooooo. Don’t ruin the good stories! We have enough trauma coming. ;) Nope, won't ruin it. But heard a nasty thing that they are seeing permanent heart damage in some misc kids. All I can find are the grown up studies already online. Fucking hell, this year sucks. Someone here, maybe Guy, posted a story a few days ago about the kids and the heart muscle being shredded. I remember reading the story, but studies are usually over my head. Not sure if there was one posted. |

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: A systematic review [link to www.thelancet.com (secure)] [link to doi.org (secure)] The predominance of cardiac manifestations in children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome was striking. Many of the patients in this review had an initial echocardiogram that was normal and a few days later showed depressed ejection fraction or dilation/aneurysm of the coronary arteries. We found that the most common cardiac abnormality, on echocardiogram, was a depressed ejection fraction (45·0%). In line with these findings, a recent study revealed that adults who recently recovered from COVID-19 had ongoing cardiac involvement and myocardial inflammation. Accordingly, children undergoing evaluation for MIS-C should have a baseline echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, and repeat imaging to follow cardiac function and artery changes. Close follow-up will be important as the long-term implications of MIS-C cardiac involvement are currently unknown. That one? Vaid Status: It's a small world after all! |

The close we get to dry up October, the more my gut is grossed out by where this is going. Here is a condensed news article that is a bit easier to read quoting the above authors: [link to news.uthscsa.edu (secure)] '“Evidence suggests that children with MIS-C have immense inflammation and potential tissue injury to the heart, and we will need to follow these children closely to understand what implications they may have in the long term,” Dr. Moreira said.' Authors will often avoid speaking out the fear of what their study may implicate in the study itself but speak a bit more freely in interviews. Studies are to present data and conclusions that follow, in this case more research is needed -- because they are afraid of the implications of and what they don't know about the tissue damage. P13315 I got some bad news tonight. My friend (in LA) has a daughter who got quite sick in March. Girl was in perfect health, an athlete on two dance teams, and is in high school. Since testing wasn't yet available in sufficient quantities, the daughter quarantined away from her family, at her boyfriend's house, as he was sick too. She didn't have the opportunity to be tested at the time, but they were hoping it was just a bad flu. As the months wore on, they started really suspecting it was COVID. Quoting: Doommonkey The daughter just got her antibody test back, and it's positive. She appears to be a long-hauler -- she's not nearly recovered, even now. She went from being an active person all around as well as an athlete, to needing to sleep nearly all day, every day. She's having trouble keeping up in classes ( she was previously a straight-A student), she now has trouble concentrating, and her personality has apparently changed a great deal. This was one of the happiest, healthiest (and most adored) kids ever.... and this just breaks my heart. It's felt extremely apocalyptic here today, what with the orange sky and all.... though I did have a good hearty laugh at the "this is fine" plushy dog tweet that was posted earlier in the thread. The sky really did look like that here -- it was orange early in the day, and had devolved to an ochre sort of color by afternoon. I've had a bad headache, nausea, and dizziness for several days, which is probably from the smoke. It happened the last time the smoke was this bad, too. I'm so glad I spent the money on my aerogardens! The one thing I was really concerned about, food wise, was fresh veggies (which is a big part of my diet, in an ideal world). I'm pretty well set for staples, but produce was a worry. Now, I have a bunch of rapidly growing heads of various lettuces, happy little tomato plants, and a rich harvest of sprouts (and a fair back stock of seeds). My herbs are also sprouting, now -- my basil looks good, and my mint is shaping up. I didn't realize that it was possible to grow veggies this well indoors. Every cent I spent on the aerogardens was worth it ... I will be happily munching on fresh veggies in the dead of winter, without needing to set foot in a store, so long as the power doesn't go out for long periods of time. If it does, I have a fair amount of canned goods... but for now, I am thrilled to have some measure of food self sufficiency. I'm already enojoying the sprouts, and will have salad greens reasonably soon. I had no idea how fast lettuce grows! (I've never had a garden before, so I am learning as I go.) I'm also very glad to be a small human, who is accustomed to fasting regularly and eating simply when I do eat. One can stretch food out much longer that way. I'm half considering buying an additional small freezer for the house, though I think I might be better off just focusing on non-perishables. I've blown through most of what savings I had, but I think I did a pretty good job of making that go a long way in terms of survival. Love and thanks to all of you! Thanks to you lovely people, I am much more prepared to cope with all these crises as they happen. I'm a bit late to the prepping game, but I think I've done a pretty good job with what I have to work with. Much love, positive energy, prayers and thoughts for you and friend’s daughter... Trying to catch up but going back to work now...had to reply to you though... Life finds a way. |

I am terribly sorry for the worry you parents have been dealing with for months now. I just recently read a book(historical fiction) about the Spanish flu. There were SO many orphans during and after. There may well be a time when you and your wife's love of children will be needed. It is really tough to think about what the kids are going through now and in the future. My kids are grown and two of them have kids. The youngest says he's a confirmed batchelor! We'll see. There is an old saying that we used to laugh about. Something about your kids may grow up, but they're always your kids. Even when they have kids of their own. |

The CDC says there are 792 reported cases in the US - [link to www.cdc.gov (secure)] but extrapolating that to a probability is nearly impossible because so many pediatric cases went and are still not diagnosed. Combine that with many kids only being retroactively tested for SarS-nCov-2 antibodies -- which are unreliable due to variable degradation of immune response -- when they develop the syndrome makes it all the harder. I don't want to downplay the risk but I don't want people to overestimate it either. There are rare complications that can occur with any viral infection, it is somewhat to be expected that we would see more anomalies with a novel virus running rampant through the population.
