P13315 Does the US import food from China? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78172537 The U.S. imported $4.6 billion in agricultural products from China in 2017. The top U.S. import commodities from China are fruits and vegetables (fresh/processed), snack food, spices, and tea – the combined which accounts for nearly one-half of the total U.S. agricultural imports from China. Yes, but very little cannot be replaced from other sources or would be considered a luxury (we can live with tea and Chinese spices if need be). We also import a lot from France and Italy too. Again, these are probably luxury foods such as wine. We import much much more from Canada and Mexico, around 12 billion each if memory serves. These are more staple foods, and would be more disastrous. Also, the US throws away 40% of our food. So there is a lot of room for improvement there in a crisis. they're not going to bring in food from China? no way. |

P13315 [link to www.biorxiv.org (secure)] Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78348904 Interesting study. The authors found evidence that immune cells of European descent have better ability to recognize antigens from the virus compared to Chinese, which would suggest less susceptibility to severe infection for people of European descent. Quoted from article: The MHC binding peptide profiles of a different racial population (i.e. European ancestry) are shown in Sup. Fig. 1. Interestingly, the T cell epitope intensities (number of binders weighted by allele frequency) are higher overall in the European population than the Chinese population, suggesting that the Chinese population may be more vulnerable to 2019-nCoV infection. P13315 It's important to remember that if this thing spreads like wildfire, is completely unstoppable and everyone catches it and not one world government is able to come up with a way to slow down the transmission or an effective treatment or vaccine or anything and it kills off 20% of world's population... There will still be the same number of people on earth as the were in 2001. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76521945 30% population die off would be 1984 numbers. That's alot of worst case scenarios based on th little actual information that's out there and really isn't even that bad. Most people here are in first world situations so localized numbers would be even less dramatic. Cant help but think this is the planets way of trying to save itself from our crazy population growth and destruction we are causing the world. Rant... Doom on guys Your first stat of 20% die off bringing the population down to what is was in 2001 is right, but your second stat is way off. A 30% world population die off would bring the population down to what it was in 1991-92, not 1984. [link to www.worldometers.info (secure)] |

People who are here on this thread from the beginning (even the trolls) do not post and discuss this to get some points or to spread panic and fear. We are here because we have someone in our lives who we love and care for. If he is not taking it seriously he doesn't love you, it is simple as that. When you love someone you become "hyperaware". Even if you look like an idiot after everything blows over. If I was in your boyfriend place I would worry if someone farts in China, because I would want to protect you from any danger, real or not. That is why I'm posting on this thread and watching every single news. Not because I'm obsessed or scared, I want to be ready to protect people I love. It's not about being right or wrong. Do you want to be with a person who doesn't care about your wellbeing? |

This has resulted in the price of garlic in the city of Padang in West Sumatra Province to rise significantly, even reaching 100%. “This comes after the uncertainty following the coronavirus. We will stop food supply imports for the moment from the country that is infected by the virus,” said Trade Minister Agus Suparmanto on Monday (February 3). Previously selling at around 25,000 to 30,000 rupiah per kilogram, garlic is currently being sold at 35,000 to 50,000 rupiah per kilogram. According to local reports, the supplies of imported garlic in the Kramat Jati Central Market in Jakarta also experienced shortage. [link to www.liveleak.com (secure)] |
