The UK is to monitor flights arriving from China, as part of a series of precautionary measures after the spread of a new coronavirus.

The measures, announced by the Department of Health, will apply to flights from Wuhan to London Heathrow.

The flights will be met in an isolated part of Terminal 4, with a health team available to check for symptoms.

On Wednesday the Department of Health announced that all direct flights from Wuhan to Britain will be met by Port Health teams to check for symptoms of coronavirus.

However on Wednesday night, passengers arriving from Wuhan to Heathrow Airport said they were not assessed.

"There was no screening at Wuhan, and there was no screening as I landed. We were given a leaflet in English saying 'if you’re experiencing any symptoms call NHS direct'.. It was quite sparse, the leaflet. I’ve not had my temperature checked," one passenger told the BBC.

A man is being treated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for symptoms associated with coronavirus, an infection which has so far killed 17 people in China.

The BBC understands that the patient travelled to Northern Ireland from the city of Wuhan.

It is understood the man is being treated in an isolation ward.

The Belfast Health Trust declined to comment.

It is understood that the man travelled from Wuhan at the weekend.

THE coronavirus outbreak could be 10 times worse than the SARS epidemic that killed 800, an expert has warned.

Leading virologist Dr Guan Yi has told Chinese media that the situation in Wuhan is already "uncontrollable" - amid fears four Scots hospital patients could have caught the infection.

He claimed the Chinese authorities had missed the "golden period" in which the virus could have been prevented from spreading.

He said: "I have experienced so much and never felt scared. Most [viruses] are controllable, but this time I am scared.
