Re: small garden help
Everyone seems to think gardening is easy. I’ve been doing it for a decade and it’s still hard to get right. My suggestion is go ahead and plant but you would be deluding yourself if you believe that you will be able to have a decent harvest. Bugs, blight, disease, poor soil, ph, drought, too much rain, fungus, etc all bite you in the ass and are near impossible to diagnose if you aren’t experienced. That said, maybe the planets will align it you will get lucky. Gotta start sometime.

Every seed doesn't germinate. Every seedling doesn't live. Every plant doesn't live.

Buy much more seed than you think you'll need.

Some seeds, like carrots, are small like grains of sand. Sneeze at the wrong time and you'll lose your packetful.

Imagine the years of hard work and loss we could have avoided if we knew then what we know now. Let's try to help them get a better start and share our experience.

I see so much bad advice it is insane. People repeating the same mistakes some newbee put out there that will lead to disaster in the long run. So much bad info.

Re: small garden help
I just went online last night and purchased two raised cedar beds (with wheels) to put on my back deck because it gets nice eastern morning sun. They are still in stock and have already shipped (just a little over $100 each). There are just so many questions about the food supply right now, and I thought perhaps I could at least have fresh salad greens. I'm also planting tomatoes strategically around the yard where I have sun and have a little spot for some high-yield veggies. You have to make do as you can right now. But get your supplies before Lowe's, HD, or your local hardware stores close down.

Re: small garden help
You do not need much money to get started. You need a fence, 100 ft of 7ft high deer netting for about $20 and some seeds. You can make your own plant food, fermented garden compost tea out of scrap and scrounge.
If starting plants indoors, you need a grow light, reflective sheeting, foil or mylar works, inexpensive peat moss mixed with a little soil you heat to sterilize. You can use just about anything for starter pots, cereal box, paper cups, milk cartons, you can make cardboard dividers, they just need good drainage holes.

A rake, hoe, shovel and hose.

Re: small garden help
I am a non-gardener who has never done enough to get good at it. My go-to plan is...

The Square Foot Garden.

IMO, there is no better beginner method out there. The info is Oder, yes, but tried-and -true. The author went all around the world in his later years to teach developing countries how to build this very simple garden.

The Square Foot Garden was developed by an engineer. It is a turn-key method, a true step-by-step guide to “making vegetables” in your yard. Focuses on small-space situations also. You only need a 4 x 4 plot (or less, really!) to grow.

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

E-text $11.95. Probably a regular ebook somewhere. I am not tech savvy.

There are a LOT of knock-offs of this method, as it works and has been around awhile. But I think his book is still the best, has been used in every imaginable situation, and he DOESN’T OVERCOMPLICATE EVERYTHING. This is where I was always getting lost!

This is what I am working on today, actually.

Nutritionists say greens are an important nutrient benefit. It is what I use most. Lettuces grow, and you can cut what you need as you go. They keep growing, and you just cut another salad tomorrow. And you have a usable crop prey quickly! Plant enough to harvest some as “baby greens” and keep some to grow to maturity later. Kale and collards too. You can grow kale and collards in hot weather too, surprisingly.

Really, look at his stuff. It was written for the people like me who have never done this before. Good luck!

You only have 2 people.

This method WORKS—even for the inexperienced like me. That is why he developed this method in the first place.

You would be amazed at how much you can grow in even a small space.

This method is virtually bug-free the first year, in my experience. It really is an awesome system—which is why it is so famous. GET THE E-BOOK. READ IT. It’s only ten bucks.

Mel the author makes it easy and fun.

Re: small garden help
thank you all so much. I am so overwhelmed but not to the point of freezing. I will go to Lowes tomorrow. I was just there a few hours ago and dropped $800 on a freezer. I wanted a little chest freezer but they were out and had to get the bigger one.

Re: small garden help
Contact your county extension service. They will help you with what to plant and give you advise. They will also test your soil for a small fee. My area extension charges 2 dollars for a ph test and 12 dollars for a complete soil analyses.

Re: small garden help
Grow root vegetables that can last al winter and learn how too can tomatoes. Have seed potatoes the ones you eat are sprayed and will not work. Butternut squash lasts all winter in cool room and very healthy. Do not plant seeds too deep.
