stick a pyramid frame over the top of bucket facing north should double the produce weight
even sticks will have an effect. any kind of material but dont mix materials especially copper with aluminium

I have a decent sized garden, although I wish I had room for a lot more squashes. But I think my favorite crop is potatoes. Easy to grow, prolific harvest, and they taste so much better than store bought.

I am having problems getting my potatoes to sprout. I think I figured out why from this article:

Sprouting the Potatoes
While the bag of grocery potatoes you leave in the cabinet will sprout on their own, that doesn’t produce the healthiest sprouts. Spread the potatoes on a level surface in a warm room with bright, indirect light. Mist them once or twice if the humidity is very low. Allow the sprouts to grow until they are about three inches tall and showing healthy green leaves.

Problems with Sprouting
Potatoes require a dormant period to sprout. If you store your potatoes – especially homegrown potatoes in a warm location, they won’t sprout because they need a period of cold first. Put them in the refrigerator in a paper bag for two to four weeks. If you’re trying to grow grocery store potatoes, those that are conventionally grown may have been treated with sprout inhibitors.

How do you know if a pyramid is facing North? It has 4 sides, which side is the North side? (Seriously!) I've read about other instances where Pyramids have been of benefit, but never anything about a directional effect!

1 20 potatoes---just leave them awhile so they grow sprouts
2 when theyve sprouted cut each potato into 4
3 those 80 sprouted pieces you put into 80 small plastic pots
(filled with earth)
4 leave them till they grow some leaves


1 take 1 draw knock a hole near the top
2 do the same on all 4 sides
3 fill draw with soil
4 put a leafy baby potato through the hole at an angle so the
leaves are poking through
5 do that on 4 sides
6 take another draw put it on the top, fill with soil+4 plants
7 take 8 (eight) more draws and stack them up
8 thats 10 draws with 40 plants
9 pour water on the top draw till water starts dripping from
the bottom one
10if youve put rollers on bottom draw you can spin them 180
every few days
11 there should be a south facing sun
12 put a pyramid on top

you might not get exactly one ton of potatoes---not far off

Yes, I'm having success with growing in bags.
Seems a trick maybe to not water them the first 1-3 weeks after planting.

take any side --- sorry,any of the 2 sides that point north, put your compass on/near the corner
and move pyramid till that one side lines up with the pointer (north)on compass

True, there are a lot of videos and instructions online saying the potato tower will produce, but they never really worked well for me, and I tried it over several seasons in different setups.

If anyone does try this method, don’t make the soil more than about 20 inches deep, as there seems to be no benefit from going higher ( like in a large, deep drum or bucket).

Just a tidbit I learned...

If you are going to grow potatoes in the ground, then any variety will do. If you are growing in towers, bags, buckets, etc., then you need to be sure you have the indeterminate variety to get the full effect.

Determinate potatoes grow in an outward, single stratum. Whereas, the indeterminate variety will grow all along the stem structure as the plant itself gets larger and taller.

You don't "hill" or mound determinate varieties except to make sure you don't expose any near-surface tubers to the sun--which creates a greening of the tuber and the genesis of a chemical called solamine, which is highly poisonous to consume.

Years ago, my late hubby tried growing potatoes in a plastic trash can, using sawdust as the growing medium. It actually worked pretty well as far as producing lots of nice-looking potatoes and they were very clean; our issue was that we didn't realize the potatoes would take on the "flavor" of the sawdust! He'd used cedar, and the potatoes tasted like pine cones! So, use a "neutral" wood (like apple, cherry, etc.) to make your sawdust/shavings for your potatoes!
