He could have blocked her attacks easily if she were to swing that cumbersome pole at him. She was probably just showing off as she could have attacked him without getting too close, using the lenght advantage but she didn't. What he does instead? Gets panicked and slams the log full force in her head, risking brain injury or even death! This was an unnecessary violence triggered by the lack of courage in that man.
