Ronald Reagan used the similar slogan "Let's make America great again" in his successful 1980 presidential campaign. Bill Clinton also used the phrase in speeches during his successful 1992 presidential campaign and again in a radio commercial aired for his wife Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential primary campaign. Democratic pollster Douglas Schoen has called Trump's use of the phrase as "probably the most resonant campaign slogan in recent history", citing large majorities of Americans who believed the country was in decline... [T]he slogan refers to "making America an economic powerhouse, a military powerhouse, pride in being an American."... Use by Ronald Reagan "Let's make America great again" was first used in Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign. At the time the United States was suffering from a worsening economy at home marked by stagflation and Reagan, using the country's economic distress as a springboard for his campaign, used the slogan to stir a sense of patriotism among the electorate. Within his acceptance speech at the 1980 Republican National Convention, Reagan said, "For those without job opportunities, we’ll stimulate new opportunities, particularly in the inner cities where they live. For those who’ve abandoned hope, we’ll restore hope and we’ll welcome them into a great national crusade to make America great again." Use by Bill Clinton The phrase was also used in speeches by Bill Clinton during his 1992 presidential campaign; however, it was not a slogan of the campaign.[12] Clinton also used the phrase in a radio commercial aired for Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential primary campaign. During the 2016 electoral campaign, Clinton suggested that Trump's version, used as a campaign rallying cry, was a message to white Southerners that Trump was promising to "give you an economy you had 50 years ago, and ... move you back up on the social totem pole and other people down." Use by Donald Trump In December 2011, Trump made a statement in which he said he was unwilling to rule out running as a presidential candidate in the future, explaining "I must leave all of my options open because, above all else, we must make America great again." Also in December 2011, he published a book using as a subtitle the similar phrase "Making America #1 Again" — which in a 2015 reissue would be changed to "Make America Great Again!" Trump popularized the slogan "Make America Great Again" by stitching it onto his widely distributed cap. Trump himself began using the slogan formally on November 7, 2012, the day after Barack Obama won his reelection against Mitt Romney. By his own account, Trump first considered "We Will Make America Great", but did not feel like it had the right "ring" to it. "Make America Great" was his next slogan idea, but upon further reflection, he felt that it was a slight to America because it implied that America was never great. After selecting "Make America Great Again", Trump immediately had an attorney register it. (Trump later said that he was unaware of Reagan's use in 1980 until 2015, but noted that "he didn't trademark it".) On November 12 he signed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office requesting exclusive rights to use the slogan for political purposes. It was registered as a service mark on July 14, 2015, after Trump formally began his 2016 presidential campaign and demonstrated that he was using the slogan for the purpose stated on the application. During the campaign, Trump often used the slogan, especially by wearing hats emblazoned with the phrase in white letters, which soon became popular among his supporters.[20] The slogan was so important to the campaign that at one point it spent more on making the hats – sold for $25 each on its website – than on polling, consultants, or television commercials. The candidate claimed that "millions" were sold. Following Trump's election, the website of his presidential transition was established at greatagain.gov... In a statement late Wednesday, the Army said that the flyer distributed to troops and contractors at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama was sent out in error, and an Article 15-6 fact-finding investigation had begun to determine how it happened. Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Alabama, demanded that those responsible for distribution of the promotional material be investigated for prosecution under the Hatch Act, limiting the political activities of the military and the civil service. "U.S. Army personnel have violated the Hatch Act and any number of military regulations by distributing materials that, among other offensive things, labels president Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' slogan or 'Celebration of Columbus Day' as white supremacist," Brooks said in a lengthy release... A similar thing (with crazier ideas, but consider the setting) came from the Diversity Office at Amherst College, and it leaked out. It was quickly disavowed and never heard from again. It's good that this leaked out. Now the thinking of the people behind it is revealed. . Anonymous Coward User ID: 79118742 United States 07/09/2020 07:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Read this carefully.... Sedition Sedition is overt conduct, such as speech and organization, that tends toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent towards, or resistance against established authority. Sedition may include any commotion, though not aimed at direct and open violence against the laws. Seditious words in writing are seditious libel. A seditionist is one who engages in or promotes the interest of sedition. Typically, sedition is not considered a subversive act, and the overt acts that may be prosecutable under sedition laws vary from one legal code to another. Where the history of these legal codes has been traced, there is also a record of the change in the definition of the elements constituting sedition at certain points in history. This overview has served to develop a sociological definition of sedition as well, within the study of state persecution. For the military, who is under direct orders of the President, to openly condemn a slogan targeted towards the Advancements of America and to label the citizenry who support The President is seditious at best, treason at worst. Get ready America, the purge is coming! |
