A suggestion for you: Start now, thinking about how you're going to handle the want to drink, especially if you've had a bad day. Have a pat reaction plan for yourself, something that takes you away from/keeps your mind off drinking....working out, taking up a craft that keeps your hands and mind busy....or even just journaling about your walk away from booze....because it will remind you of why you stopped in the first place, and you'll appreciate your sobriety even more when you read it years later. Actually, doing all three of those items would be great....but ya gotta stay busy, and stay the course when you get overwhelmed. It's most likely you'll get triggered or overwhelmed one day and perhaps you'll tell yourself just one drink will relax you, and then one turns into two and three and four....so be prepared for it, have a plan. Personally I would take them one at a time; focus wholly on your drinking and then focus wholly on your smoking. Don't try to quit both at the same time. |

A couple of open ended questions, please. How old were you when you started drinking? Did you start drinking to "escape" or for the taste of the liquor? Do you feel you can just put it down and walk away or it is always gnawing at you? After decades of sobriety, would you say the urge is still with you? Do you feel alcoholism is from genetics or certain situations? Thanks for you insight. I've pondered these questions from the other side of the coin. I personally do not have the urge to drink nor do I like the taste of the booze. Just wondering about your side of the coin. |

I feel soo much better. Then 2 weeks ago, I lost the need to drink. I guess I got tired of it? I wasn't a drink every day person, Im more of the binge alcoholic. So that was easier. Here's what reallly helped. I have a nintendo switch I never used in 3 years, I kept it around for family, kids etc..well, I picked it up around the same time I quit smoking, and that passed the time so well that it had a big effect on how easy it was to quit. I think I traded one addiction for another, but at least Breath of the Wild doesn't make me cough, or feel hungover. Im happy for anyone who can do this! Congrats to one and all. |

Your AV pic reminds me of a dream I had, once and then again the same night. It was creepy, I'd start out walking down a hall that had all these faces poking out of it, just like your AV pic. That's my training coming through there....along with my sense of caring. Addiction is a hard thing to come back from, and I will support anyone who is trying to kick it in the butt, as long as they're really trying. Some just put on a show that they're trying. Alcohol and opiates are beast's to leave behind....and as I've found, so are cigarettes. I'm doing my best to leave them behind, but it's going to take time. I tried cold turkey twice last year, and I thought I was going to lose my mind on the fifth day both times. My brother, a recovering alcoholic and pill popper, told me that's called the "Addict's phenomenon"....I hadn't heard of it before (surprisingly), but it's some kind of phenomenon I don't like being in...I really thought my brain was just going to explode. It felt like it was. You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
