Vet wants to put down my dog. What should I do
My german shepart has been acting very lethargic lately, struggling to breath, and his stomach has started to swell. The vet did an x-ray today and noticed his heart is enlarged. They diagnosed him with DCL (Dilated Cardiomyopathy). They are blaming it on a grain free diet.

He is declining and the vet has recommended euthanasia. He's only 7, and I'm not ready to let him go yet. Do you have any suggestions GLP?

Get a 2nd opinion. Take the X-rays to another vet and get blood work done.

Are his mucous membranes pale? Signs of anemia? Even if it's dcl there is specific medication for it so you should at least try.

All the best of luck, hope you can have some more healthy years together hf

Get second opinion and check for Bloat. Plus blood work. Dogs don't eat grains.

Probably the best thing you could feed him.

Some people have good results with raw chicken diets.

My one buddy was paying some ridiculous price for natural dogfood online and the dog died of cancer at like 6 years old.

That's all he gets? That's not enough nutrition.

Dogs are not solely carnivores. Like humans, they are omnivores and need more than meat alone

1) supplements: vitamin, mineral chews or powder to add to home made dog food. Eggshells are good for calcium.. cook, grind & add to food

2) veggies: cook up squash, parsnips, carrot, sweet potato, peas, etc...

3) Fruit: blueberries, cranberries, Apple, peach, pear

4) Oil: fish or salmon oil liquid, capsules added to food. Eggs.

5) Grains: cooked rice, quinoa, millet

Most beef nowadays is from cows fed on a GMO and corn diet. Lots of antibiotics and additives are unhealthy.

Can also try making burgers out of ground turkey or ground chicken for variety

Good lord.

My childhood dog lived to be almost 17 years old. He was a Bichon Frise. We fed him just regular old dog food.

My sister's cat died just before I think it was her 18th birthday. She ate regular cat food, no special diet, and did not see a vet until we had to take her in because she had ended up having a stroke. That's when she was put down. Before that, never went to the vet.
