The masks are supposed to cut down the large amount of virus loads in a cough or sneeze. this protects others if you have the virus. lower viral load the better your immune system can handle it. possibly some if not some sort of immunity.

The picture is correct. The masks are not made to ventilate or keep particles out. its about keeping them from getting out. this is why surgens use them. not that they are afraid of getting sick from operating, but to help not expose the person operated on from getting any infection from him.
