Co-Founder of BLM Patrisse Cullors and Dr. Melina Abdullah on summoning spirits

Patrisse Cullors, National Co-Founder of BLM, and Dr. Melina Abdullah, Co-Founder of the LA chapter of BLM (self stated Marxists) are speaking about what this movement is to them, and that is a "spiritual movement". They describe channeling spirits for help and becoming very close with those spirits, even feeling personally accountable to the spirits. They get to know these spirits individually and can always tell who is coming through, "Wakeisha always makes me laugh". Patrice says the hashtags they use are way more than just a hashtag, but an important practice of resurrecting the spirits of the dead, adding that these spirits "work through us to help to get the work we need to get done".

Their practice was said to be detrimental to the BLM movement, attributing it to their success and ability to have come this far. They seem to be describing the religion Ifá or Afá, which is a Yoruba religion and system of divination. Patrisse says she believes her dead relatives work through them, and offers up things they liked in this life such as honey and tobacco to summon them. She wants these spirits to know they are working for them, and they appreciate what they have done.

She admits that BLM is much more than a social justice movement, at its core it is a spiritual movement.
