Once 22LR doesn't stop an elk. It will run away injured and in great pain and you will not be able to keep up to get it for dinner. When you hunt, you want a larger bullet to put the animal down now and out of its misery with no chance to run off.

You can harvest an elk with a .22 but you need to hit it right in the eye head on of in the ear canal so it gets into the brain. It’ll run a bit but won’t go far. Unless you can hit a quarter from 100 yards don’t try it. You’ll just injure the animal.

When I was 16 I took a small deer buck with .22 LR standard velocity. I shot it from a tree stand right in the ear from about 150 feet. It did a back flip and died on the spot. If you hit the elk anywhere else on the skull it might ricochet.
