It’s a hope for many people, specially for soldiers.

There was a Jimmy Olsen (Superman's pal) comic book story in which Jimmy gained four extra arms, to become "The Human Octopus."

Jimmy had a really great attitude about it, and was making the most of the situation, but Jimmy's friends, including Superman, fretted about Jimmy not being overly concerned about becoming a freak.

In the course of the story, Jimmy learned that being a freak was a bad thing, lost the extra arms, and went back to being normal. That story always came across to me as not having a very good message for kids.
