On top of the general fact that they don't give a shit, they get the money and the favors from big business when they're done as politicians and they get a nice fat government benefits package paid for by the people they screwed over the whole time they were in office. Of course it's a joke, of course they laugh, politics is nothing more than organized crime that happens to be legal and as a result much more lucrative. On top of all that, they can't be prosecuted for anything they do while the state of emergency is in effect and once it's lifted, if it ever is, they can't be prosecuted after the fact either. They can quite literally get away with anything and who's going to stop them? Why wouldn't they laugh.
