Nicaragua – The Country That Didn’t Swallow the Covid Blue Pill
I live in Nicaragua along the border of CR (hence the CR flag).

The virus has devastated tourism, but we have had several dismal years of tourism since the violence in 2018, so at this point we are kind of used to it.

I live in a rural community with less than 10 foreign residents/winter visitors. Our little pueblo had protocols. Even the chainsaw repairman in the jungle had a bucket of water, soap and alcohol for his customers to use before entering the property. We took it seriously, but without laws and lockdowns.

Costa Rica shut down their beaches (with police checkpoints to prevent access) and banned foreigners from driving until Aug 1. Nicaragua is the best place to be in a lockdown (especially for me as I have 263 acres of mountains, jungle, streams and waterfalls, and a lakeside beach with a view of an island made of two volcanoes).

"No curfews, no lockdowns, no “stay at home”, no psychosis, no covid-calamities. There has been much talk about the Swedish corona strategy but the strategy of Nicaragua has been by far more successful, with many fewer deaths, no “economic rescue” for big banks and only limited damage to small and medium sized businesses.

In the midst of the worldwide economic debacle caused by covid hysteria, food self-sufficient, small business based, impoverished Nicaragua, has seen its exports grow over 10% the past 8 months because it did not shut down its economy.

Precisely because it sustained its economy, it has not had to take on huge loans in order to face the emergency.

Thus, its foreign debt levels remain within a readily manageable range, below 50% of GDP. (On the other hand, the economies of neighboring countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, are hurting badly with debt levels soaring)."

Sounds like Taiwan, or East Timor. Low COVID cases sometimes means the cabal is weak in that particular country.

The Global Warming part of the article is BS, but Ortega did invest heavily in the infrastructure. There years ago a hurricane cut electricity to the entire country for days and caused a bridge that connects my town to the "mainland" away. Within hours the local authorities had organized pangas to transport people and motos across the river. Five days later we had a floating barge pulled by pangas to use as a makeshift ferry. Within 48 hours -on a country without electricity - the government had all of the steel girders stacked along the road to replace the bridge while they started to rebuild the retaining wall. The government did not ask for any outside assistance.

There is a lot of bigotry against Nicaraguans by Ticos. It was never that bad. San Jose is far worse. I have a friend who lives near Nosara (CR) who sleeps with two guns on either side of his bed because there are so many armed home invasions. In CR, thieves hook up sleeping agents to AC vents and knock out entire families. I have met on victim and know several others whose neighbors homes were robbed this way.

Violence and theft is definitely on the increase since COVID appeared, which is pretty much the case around the world. Prior to this (an excluding the political violence of 2018), Nicaragua was considered the safest country in Central America.

Agreed OP, been here for years teaching myself about sustainable living and it's really paying off now. No where else in the world I would rather be. I've never once considered leaving. At the start of all this I joked with friends how the 'no strategy' method here would probably be the best thing that could happen.

Shout out to the south from Ometepe.

I stayed in Nicaragua around 2008. It is sparse and rural. The view and breeze @ Pelican Eyes was great. Close contact seem to be the deciding factor in spread.

I spent some time trying to figure out where to go if things get really bad, and though no place is perfect I concluded that Nicaragua might be one of the better places to go.

Can one of you who lives there answer if white Americans are disliked these days, do single women ever move there by themselves and are cost of living prices still reasonable? Are other expats friendly?

I was interested in maybe moving to one of the mountain villages but wherever it is safe and welcoming enough would be fine.

Is there anyway to get into Nicaragua without a test?

We were trying to get our family to Nicaragua , we got out of the USA a year ago to Mexico. We are in Mexico hoping Nicaragua will stop their mandatory covid test to get in.

Any ideas ?

In certain ways, sure. But the totalitarian, Orwellian-1984 leftism of the Maduro people and government must be right up there with what the Jiping Xi and Kim Jong-il crowd likes to do to humans.

You could also say that, hey, Jeffrey Epstein provided free air and board, and a nice tropical island, to various young women. So, damn, don't complain, sweethearts.

I am single and and live alone in the jungle. I feel safe here. I have lived in Nicaragua for 15 years. I have been the victim of violent crime in Nicaragua, but not in this particular spot where I feel very safe. The time of my home invasion was a very dark period in terms of violence in the region. There has been an uptick in violence and theft with the economic decline. Tourism and foreigners living here on tourist visas was a big source of income that is now gone.

There is no discrimination against Americans aside from occasional economic discrimination against foreigners. The government wants and encourages more foreigners to become residents.

I eat very well on $300 a month. That is fresh fruits and vegetables every day and the occasional splurges on baked goods, imported cheeses and good ones from the farmers market. I could easily live on half of that and still eat well. My biggest expenses are imported items like curry pastes and extra virgin cold pressed olive oil. At the restaurants in my town, beer is $1 and a chicken dinner is about $5.80 without tip.

Probably as soon as the border to CR reopens they will get rid of the testing. Hopefully by the first of the year. there will be many refugees from the US after the election, regardless of who wins.

White Americans are not disliked more than anywhere else, its all about how you treat other people here, not where you are from. Speaking Spanish also makes a huge difference for cultivating friendships here, unlike Costa Rica, not many locals speak English in Nicaragua.

Yes, single women move down here, I know a few in this area. They all have big dogs or a cuidador (security guard) to keep them a bit safer at night.

Nicaragua is a very poor country. The average daily wage here is 9 to 10 dollars, so yes the cost of living is very low, if you wish to live frugally. Fully furnished beach houses here are renting for $300/month in this area, to give you an idea of how affordable it is.

Yes, most expats are friendly, but like anywhere, you will find a bad apple here and there, lots of expat alcoholics here too. More expats live near the beach per capita than in the mountain towns in my experience, so as a single woman it would probably be better for you to live in a beach town, where you can have some sort of expat support if needed, especially if you arent fluent in Spanish.

Cheers

Just my personal experience on the things you're asking about...

- Lots of gringos left when the political crisis started, more left when the covid thing started. The ones that are still here love the country and culture and typically have good relations with the Nicas. I would say in this regard whites are liked more than ever because the ones that are still here have really bonded together with the community to ride out the economic downturn. Foreign biz owners have really gone to great lengths to keep their employees on, even to the detriment of their own biz. The Nicas know this and appreciate it.

- The rental market was booming prior to the political crisis and has now completely bottomed out. Cost of living (rent) is super cheap.

- Single women have no problems as long as you don't fall in with a certain class of guy that makes their living preying on emotionally vulnerable tourists. Good men to be found here, avoid the scammers.

- Suggest you start in San Juan del Sur and venture out from there as you get your feet under you. Heading to a remote area is not a good idea until you get a feel for the flow of things.

- Expats are friendly for the most part and help each other out. Except, in my experience Granada. For some reason the jerks seems to land there. No offense to any good expats living there but it's a fact that Granada has a history of child sex tourism. The govt has tried to clean it up but it seems to still be an issue. Sad really, Granada is beautiful.

Bottom line, great place, not for everyone. If you can take care of yourself you'll be fine. If you need a babysitter or are an asshole this place will eat you alive.

I think that Ortega knew that there will be a financial reset or that Nicaragua will default on its debt, nationalize the infrastructure and say FU to the IMF, so why not build a good infrastructure? We also have one of the best spots in the world for a wind farm that generate as significant amount of energy for Nicaragua and Costa Rica. W have much better rural roads and bridges than CR with its high taxes.

There have been major investments in hospitals, too. (We already have a world class hospital and burn center - Vivian Pellas in Managua. Most of their doctors are Board Certified in the US.)

Thanks so much for the insight.

It would probably be easier not to move alone, but not many people seem to consider moving there.

I am going look into it again, it does sound like one of the beach towns might be a better place to start off, I would be happier too in a smaller place as I don't like big cities.
