If the grid were to collapse and America turned into an apocalyptic zone, where would you go? In North America, some places are easier to survive in than others.

There are obvious hotspots that should be avoided at all costs. For example, the major cities along the east and west coasts, which not only would be obvious enemy targets but would also turn into total chaos if the grid were to go down.

But there are many other places that would be dangerous, too. For example, northern California and eastern Oregon and Washington may seem like ideal locations, but where do you think everybody else is going to flee to when the cities are hit or become shut down? Exactly.

As Canadian Prepper explains in this video, there are a few areas that will be safer when the SHTF. Here’s his list:

Look at the old US navy map or cayce map and then add considerations on top of that. Canadian prepper doesn’t cover this side of the equation. Blind leading blind

First you have to look where all the nuke plants are. Don't be downwind!

Re: The Best Places To Be When SHTF (If the grid were to collapse and America turned into an apocalyptic zone, where would you go? In North America,
The attachment's list has some obvious issues. I evaluated this question some years ago. I assumed I'd have no electricity or other utilities and it's through that lense I address some of his picks:

Idaho, Montana, Dakotas - I grew up in Montana...it was no unusual to have 70 below ZERO wind chill in the winter. Presuming we have no utilities and are on our own, yes, there is wood to burn, but damn, that's a lot of work to simply keep from freezing to death when you could just live somewhere warmer. I crossed the whole north off my list for this reason.

Montana also has that issue of the Caldera that keeps threatening to blow up, so there's that.

Not to mention, the guy says due to sparse population, there's no risk of being a nuke target. I still remember getting under my desk in grade school for the nuke drills we had during the cold war. We were one of the PRIMO targets due to all the nuke silos in the unpopulated areas of the north.

Maine, NH, Vermont - again, too cold. And I view both coasts out due to risk of hurricanes, tidal waves, etc.

AZ, NM - I again crossed off the SW because of natural resources...namely, WATER. It's also overrun with illegals. I guess there's good places in the elevated areas, but they are financially out of reach for most.

Appalachians - he nailed it. After extensive research, I choose that. 5 acres in the foothills on the west side, in TN. Trouble is, I have nothing built on it. But I DO have all the materials for an earthbag house staged there in a barn. In a pinch, I could do something with it. And it's 2 hours from my primary location. God help anyone who tries to come there uninvited. Those mountain boys are not to be trifled with.

I live in a major West Coast city with an agreeable climate, and to be honest, I'd stay. I have a house, I have a network of friends here who each have property and/or useful skills, and we could band together and provide mutual assistance. I don't know very many of my neighbors, but they seem like a decent bunch of mostly-older folks, and I'm sure they'd be willing to organize.

If we went our own separate ways, we'd each be strangers--outsiders--in new places, where we wouldn't be as familiar with the climate/growing season and where to easily/cheaply acquire various resources, including shelter. And would the locals welcome us if we fled to rural areas, or would they look at us as invaders, running away from the very mess we'd created? I wouldn't blame them one bit if it was the latter.

I expect a lot of people, especially the high-rise apartment dwellers, would flee my city in a SHTF scenario, but it would be a panic move. A lot of them would end up dead, or have an even worse struggle ahead of them than if they'd just stayed put, on their own familiar turf, and banded together with neighbors.

Central Utah. The elevation would be key to massive tidal waves. The sparse population would be beneficial to diseases. The Great Basin bristlecone pine is found there and the oldest living one is 4,854 years old. Another reason would be Pando the clonal colony of an individual male quaking Aspen estimated at 14,000 years old.

Ben says somewhere about 5000' so he chose Colorado Springs, CO. I'm thinking that's a little too far south, but, hey, who am I to argue against an expert.

If the Earth tilts 90* from the North Pole then the middle of Greenland will be at the equator. Thus, if you live in the southern half of CONUS you will end up being where South America now sits. Yea, that will be very cold. So you need to figure out how to stay at the 5000' elevation and still be close to the new equator. Probably the best location for that will be the Eastern part of Idaho, the Western part of Montana and Wyoming. Yea, one poster said that Montana was bitterly cold during the winter time, but when the earth tilts Montana will be placed where central Mexico now rests. That will be far warmer than South America.

Then think about fuel. Once the tilt happens there will be no electricity or natural gas. So the only fuel that will be available is wood. In Colorado Springs there is minimal wood because it is a desert. Hard to keep warm when you have no trees to cut down. The afore mentioned parts of Montana have lots of trees.

Yea, Ben is a smart guy, but I think he needs to move his compound a few hundred miles north so he won't freeze to death.

Also you need to think about food procurement. The tilt of the Earth will decimate most deer, elk, and other large mammals. So be prepared to hunt whatever is walking, running, slithering or crawling along the ground. Also place yourself near a lake. The waters in that area should be full of trout and that would be a great source of protein. Fresh water? If you are near a lake or stream, if you can burn wood and make charcoal, and if you can gather some sand and pebbles then you can make a water filtration system that is reliable and easy to manufacture.

Yea, I'd find a few acres which are away from a large population center but still have a few likeminded persons. Never can tell when you might need a hand to heft a log or two while rebuilding a cabin. Don't forget to have a good stash of saws, chisels, hammers, and some nails. Basic caveman building materials will make your life much much easier.

If this tilt/shift thing is real, I think what we could be facing is most everything wiped out. It will be the end. Timesup. The violent forces of nature will send tsunamis, earthquakes, and storms the likes of which haven’t been seen since the Days of Noah. Ain’t gonna be no trees left standing.

IF it really happens... I actually read the infamous Velikovsky book about the great flood once! It was one of the best, most fascinating books I have ever read. And that is why my attitude re: such an event is pretty bleak.
