Big old English style dances? I’ve been to a few in New York, Atlanta, Oregon. Sadly they are all cancelled.

Or maybe someone knows of underground contra dance ??

This is my favorite contra song, it’s a cover of “Flying Home to Shelly” by Paul Gitlitz, covered by Swallowtail.

The only "underground" contradance that I ever attended was held in a basement hall below sidewalk level somewhere in NYC.
But that was decades ago.

Nowadays there's too many contrakarens who would rat out the covid contradancers.

Re: Anyone ever went to Contra Dances?
Many happy memories from days gone by! A lovely girlfriend dragged me bodily to one, and then some more. At the time I was living on the east coast and visited many venues and dance weekends. Glendale has memories, as does downtown NYC, along with Princeton, etc. Wild Asparagus and Swallowtail too.

I don't enjoy dancing much these days, perhaps because I don't have such a girl to be with. Women make the dance worth engaging in. The theatrics of guys in dresses is rather annoying. Those people should have separate contra lines.

Yes, well the difference is you have 2 long rows and a caller, so you get to dance with many in the same dance but you do have a partner.

Re: Anyone ever went to Contra Dances?
LOVE contra dancing!!!!

It's so energetic and yet strangely elegant at the same time. It's descended from English country dancing and Irish ceilidh dancing, as is square dancing. Much less formal than the stiff-petticoat and cowboy hat style of square dancing, though. Live music and wild calling.

Introduced my then-soon-to-be hubby to it in 1988. Iran contra was still in the news and my soon-to-be country MIL wondered aloud what her sweet little son's wild new girlfriend had gotten him into.
More deplorable all the time.
