All INTEL, AMD, QUALCOMM CPUs Will Now Come With The "PLUTON SECURITY CHIP" Made By MICROSOFT VERY SOON. THE TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN USED SINCE 2013: Microsoft said Pluton made its first appearance in the Xbox One back in 2013 to make it far more difficult to hack the console or allow gamers to run pirated games. The chip later graduated to Microsoft’s cloud service Azure Sphere, used to secure low-cost Internet of Things devices. The idea now is to bring that same technology, with some improvements, to new Windows 10 devices. The chip comes with immediate benefits, like making hardware attacks against Windows devices far more difficult to succeed. But the chip also solves a major security headache by keeping the device’s firmware up-to-date. |

Today customers receive updates to their security firmware from a variety of different sources than can be difficult to manage, resulting in widespread patching issues. Pluton provides a flexible, updateable platform for running firmware that implements end-to-end security functionality authored, maintained, and updated by Microsoft. Pluton for Windows computers will be integrated with the Windows Update process in the same way that the Azure Sphere Security Service connects to IoT devices. |

It would likely mean that even though YOU DO NOT HAVE WINDOWS 10 INSTALLED, you still have a MICROSOFT SECURITY CHIP INSIDE YOUR CPU. ONE THAT TALKS TO MICROSOFT SERVERS FOR "FIRMWARE UPGRADES". AND THAT COULD - IN THEORY - COMPLETELY DEFEAT THE PURPOSE OF YOUR LINUX INSTALL. This thing sounds A LOT LIKE THE OLD "CLIPPER CHIP" THAT CAUSED SUCH OUTRAGE BACK IN THE DAY. |

So there are fewer people involved, and the PC is going to be more secure for it. The fact that Microsoft designed a processor and Intel is putting it in their CPU—that’s like a head-exploding concept." https://imgur.com/a70LlVB Last Edited by FreedomLawDemocracy on 11/17/2020 01:37 PM |

Right now, your firmware updates can come from a variety of places. They could come from Windows Update, Lenovo has its Vantage app, HP has Support Assistant, Dell has SupportAssist, and there's more. This is hard to manage, and Microsoft says that Pluton for Windows PCs will be "integrated with the Windows Update process in the same way that the Azure Sphere Security Service connects to IoT devices." |

Apparently Apple uses similar tech in their computers, I'm going to go hunt up whether opensource OSes have problems on that platform. edit: Yes, until the Linux kernel with T2 support was shipped with a distro you could boot from the install media but T2 made the internal drive invisible. By integrating the chip inside future Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm central processor units, or CPUs, it makes it far more difficult for hackers with physical access to a computer to launch hardware attacks and extract sensitive data, the companies said. “The Microsoft Pluton design will create a much tighter integration between the hardware and the Windows operating system at the CPUthat will reduce the available attack surface,” said David Weston, director of enterprise and operating system security at Microsoft. Microsoft said Pluton made its first appearance in the Xbox One back in 2013 to make it far more difficult to hack the console or allow gamers to run pirated games. The chip later graduated to Microsoft’s cloud service Azure Sphere, used to secure low-cost Internet of Things devices. The US Supreme Court has previously ruled that Microsoft cannot control, limit or otherwise interfere with or remove software installed by users of it's OS even if that software was illegally obtained. They are also not legally allowed to disable access to a users device for any reason other than theft of the device itself. That would mean using the chip for DRM, at least on a PC, would be a violation of that ruling. However, that decision was handed down about twenty years ago if I recall and we seem to be living in clown world now so I'm guessing anything could happen. |
