Question about a Freemason term.
What is the Masonic meaning when a legitimate Freemason tells you that something they told you is “on the level?”

Re: Question about a Freemason term.
On the level means that it has been measured by Hiram Abiff and his Freemason instruments. It does not mean it is square it only means it is on the ground. Take that for whatever you think it means.

Re: Question about a Freemason term.
in terms of secret societies it means that whatever they are talking about is "kosher", approved by the priests

"on the level" is a general term a lot of people use

in the context of a secret society it means that the leadership has approved of the thing

Good question!

Disclosure: I am a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction - and a 3rd degree Mason from a lodge recognized by, and under the jurisdiction of, The Grand Lodge of Texas. I bring this up because each jurisdiction in the U.S. (and the world) is going to have some differences in how degrees are preserved and administered, and have its own rules regarding what information can and cannot be disclosed.

The phrase "on the level" has many meanings and I've seen brothers use it in various ways in official and unofficial capacity.

The following has been cleared by The Grand Lodge of Texas to communicate and is actually printed by them in plain text (which is something Masons do not do with so-called secrets, by the way. Other Brothers from other jurisdictions might have more strict rules as to what they can and cannot talk about.) I am paraphrasing from the text: The Level is one of the six Jewels of the lodge and it teaches equality. There are actually some really interesting ramifications of this concept when taken on by a Mason - you can feel free to ask questions at your local lodge.

Furthermore, it is not uncommon for Masons in my lodge to use this phrase with each other a prefix to their statement in order to affirm they are speaking the truth.

You've probably heard or seen the phrase "death is the great equalizer" before, there's some overlap with that.

I trust that sufficiently answers your question! Let me know if you have any more :)

Yeah, this is pretty common to see online. The idea that your neighborhood Masons are involved in human sacrifice is absurd. I have never heard of this from a masonic brother and work in the lodge has nothing to do with this, at all. I suppose it's possible there's a clandestine group of Masons that perform this evil, but it's not one I'd ever be associated with - and I'd advocate exposure.

The worshiping Lucifer thing... IDK where this comes from exactly. I will say this. If a non-Mason (I don't like to use the word profane) gets there hands on a certain degree, it is POSSIBLE they could misinterpret some uses of the word "light," but this akin to an elementary school student misunderstanding something they read by Shakespeare. There is a significant level of critical analysis one must hold, along with a masonic education, to understand the greater context of many of the later degrees. Although to be honest, there's a lot of knowledge and interpretation that has been lost over the years. So there's several degrees that are lacking when it comes to Masons who try to understand them (this, of course, varies by jurisdiction as they will have different degrees all together.)

Hi, thank you for offering to answer more questions. I work around a lot of masons at a grand lodge although I am in no way affiliated. Why do they all use the same parting expression of, “take care?”

It is if it's a Catholic church. Masonry is anti-Catholic and no Catholic is allowed to join the Masons.
