Re: RE:IRS.......I am fit to be tied! Four month free sub to GLP involved!
The typical charge for a POA and the time spent contacting the IRS (yup, we have to wait on hold too), is around $150 to $250 depending on the time spent.

Honestly, there probably isn’t anything a practitioner can do to speed this process up; we can merely obtain answers quicker on where the IRS is on the process. You still have the right to pull transcripts on your own, however, and you can check in by doing so periodically. But, paying a practitioner to call the IRS to retrieve the same answers they would give to you wouldn’t be worth the money. I never charge my clients knowing there would be no resolution in the end; some of us still have some ethics in this biz!

If, however, there was a pending lien or levy, obviously it would be a no brainer. The unfortunate thing is, once we file the returns, the speed of the refund or stimulus check processing is out of our hands completely. Hang in there, like the other poster stated, if you are due a refund (not including the stimulus check), you will receive interest at 3%, which beats the heck out of any bank currently.

My pleasure. Sorry I didn’t have the magic pill. Dealing with the IRS is like dealing with any other Govt agency; inefficiencies, delays, frustration. Hopefully dealing with Social Security will be better. If you are married or even if you are not, I would highly recommend learning about strategies to file for your benefits. The SS employees are NOT trained to determine your best strategy and many of them will not fully inform you. Much like asking for tax advice from an IRS agent. Do yourself a favor and sign up for a webinar or conference regarding your SS options; they’ve changed over the past few years so it would be helpful to be informed.

You need a Tax Advocate from the IRS. Every area has them.

I cannot provide a number, as every area is different.

Also, your return must be fully processed.

Sorry if this has been mentioned.

Mine took forever. Good luck.

EDIT: I have over two pages of replies at the time of this pinning. I've tried everything, I'm sending away for my tax account transcripts, I am going to try going to an IRS office, I've done everything suggested....most of it was already done before I even started this thread.

What I want to know is if someone reads through this thread, the problems I've had, and they have had the same problems, they've found a surefire way to talk to someone and they can provide that phone number for me, then I am indeed going to give them a four month upgrade.

Thank you.

DOES ANYONE HAVE A DIRECT PHONE NUMBER TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THEIR FIRST STIMULUS PAY THEY HAVEN'T YET RECEIVED....YOU KNOW, A NUMBER TO SOMEONE WITH ACCESS TO A FUCKING IRS SYSTEM?

So let me get this straight. You're actively trying to take advantage of an extremely socialist program? Strange.

I did what I was asked, refiled my 2018 taxed - because the nitwits lost it, apparently - and my 2019 taxes at the beginning of July, so they'd have an address on record to send it to. It's been over four fucking months.

Works used it twice in a month. Waited 1.5 hours.

How do you speak to a live person at the IRS?

The IRS telephone number is 1-800-829-1040.
The first question the automated system will ask you is to choose your language.
Once you’ve set your language, do NOT choose Option 1 (regarding refund info). Choose option 2 for “Personal Income Tax” instead.
Next, press 1 for “form, tax history, or payment”.
Next, press 3 “for all other questions.”
Next, press 2 “for all other questions.”
When the system asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, do NOT enter anything.
After it asks twice, you will be prompted with another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Finally, press 4 for all other inquiries. The system should then transfer you to an agent.

Did you miss the deadline to register online for the Economic Impact Payment?

You may still be eligible to receive a payment in 2021 if:

You did not register online, by mail and did not get a payment in 2020 or,
You received a payment, but it wasn’t the full amount of the Economic Impact Payment. The maximum credit is $1,200, or $2,400 if married filing jointly, plus $500 for each qualifying child.

Then:

When you file a 2020 Form 1040 or 1040SR you may be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit. Save your IRS letter - Notice 1444 Your Economic Impact Payment - with your 2020 tax records. You’ll need the amount of the payment in the letter when you file in 2021.

Read those pages to determine your options.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79075757

Nope, did them by hand, mailed them in. No payment to me or them involved....so basically, that has me in some kind of limbo wherein I can't talk to anyone about it....found that out from the automated witch. In that part of the phone process, you have to enter in at least $1....but I did not pay or receive anything.

This even though I did send in a payment for last year, but somehow they never received the tax return I included in the envelope, just the payment....I mean, how the fuck did they even have a way to find my address to send me the notice about that earlier this year....yes, it took them almost a year to notify me of that issue.

I have an usual name, but not that unusual....jeebus fracking crust.

I've been crawling all over that website. I'm pretty sure I've worn out every phone avenue.

 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

They have said it may take 18 months to process all paper returns. If you are required to file, or file to get a refund, part of the 2020 tax return will include a refundable credit for those who qualify but did not receive their stimulus funds this year.

I heard that the trick is to ignore it when it asks for your ssn#. It will ask you twice if you ignore it you get the option to speak with someone. It worked for me but you will be on hold a long time.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79493857

To get a live person on their main line (1-800-829-1040), choose option 2 (questions about withholding, request for a tax transcript, or “all other questions”). That’ll put you in line for a real person. Be patient. You’ll be on hold for a significant time. They’re still very understaffed.

There is one in Las Cruces, over an hour away. I may be traveling there for work in the future, if so perhaps I'll have the time to run in there to see if I can get some answers.

Make sure and call first to be sure they're open.
And hopefully they can make an appointment for you.

Appointment making like that would be very difficult given my job. I don't even know until late in the afternoon the day before what run I will have the next day.

When I googled where they are in Cruces it did say the office was open. Unfortunately, the phone number there is the same 800-829-1040 number, or I would've called them.

Re: RE:IRS.......I am fit to be tied! Four month free sub to GLP involved!
I’m a tax guy and I can tell you calling the IRS, on the taxpayer side, is worthless/fruitless. The IRS has a phone line (PPS) for practitioners, but you’ll need to grant the practitioner a signed POA to access your records; no way around that unfortunately.

Also, be patient, and know the IRS is sooooo far behind right now with their mail. Think about it, they shut down for several weeks during the busiest time of the tax season. They have mail they haven’t even opened or processed from Feb and March. I have clients that E-Filed back in Feb and March just now receiving their refunds. I’ve heard second and third hand accounts of tractor trailers full of unread mail waiting for the IRS employees when they returned to work. A mess.

You’ll receive your Stimulus Check, but it would’ve been so much better had you EFiled the 2018 and 2019 return, since that is the return the IRS used for most folks to qualify the Stimulus Payment. The normal processing time on mailed returns is several months. Mailing during a pandemic, who honestly knows?

Hang in there and be patient, unless you are willing to pay a practitioner to get a POA to get some real, and quicker answers, it may not be worth the $$$, however, to do so. Worst case scenario, you receive your Stimulus Check in the form of a tax credit on your 2020 tax return. I know, I know, just don’t shoot the messenger.

What I hate worse is holding for 30 minutes just to hear, “We’re sorry, the call volume is extremely high currently, please call back at another time.” The client just paid for wasted time. These are your tax dollars hard at work. Once I spoke to an IRS agent over a very simple issue, but there was no other way to get it resolved than to call the IRS.

The agent got a little huffy so I blurted out, “think of the burden on the taxpayer to have to hire me to get this issue resolved.” She responded and I kid you not, “The burden on the taxpayer, think about the burden on us!” Wow, the terrible burden the IRS must feel for getting paid to DO THEIR JOBS! That’s the mentality you deal with when you call the IRS, not always, but sometimes. There’s always the agent that provides great service, of course, but it’s easier to find someone working at the local Home Depot besides the two people at the registers.

What state are you in? My mother was trying to get a copy of her birth certificate (born and adopted in Arkansas, lifelong Texas resident) to get the Real ID. Arkansas and Texas kept sending her back and forth for a solid year. She finally got fed up and called the governor's office in Texas and actually spoke to his personal assistant- they got her hooked right up!

Point being maybe you shouldn't brush off the idea of calling your state governor or a senator from your state. They maybe can hook you up with whoever you need to talk to at the IRS.
