I did that in 2011. And I agree, it was the best thing ever, because I was blind as a bat with coke bottle glasses, nearsighted.

Now, 9 years later, it's started wearing off in just the last year or so, and I have to have 2x reading glasses to read any printed material or do computer work. Farsighted now instead of nearsighted.

Supposedly my surgery came with a 'free tuneup' but I don't know if that offer expired after a certain amount of time. I'm trying to find where the heck I put my paperwork so I can take advantage of it. Sure can't afford to pay for another round of it now, after having been laid off much of this past year. Just now starting to get back on my feet and plenty of other debt to dig out of :(

Yeah I spent the entire year 2020 getting mine done. And $16K later. My final appointment in on the 4th of next month.

In 2018 I had ~$55,000 worth of work (quoted by U.S. dentist/implantologist) done for ~$13,000 in Costa Rica at the Cavallini Clinic. Nice modern clinic, all modern equipment etc. Hotel attached to clinic for convenience. Took 2 visits. Got 7 implants in upper, all zirconia (top quality and beautiful) restorations, plus a bunch of crowns. A buttload of work. Cost mentioned was all-in, including flights, hotel.

I don't know what effect the covid thing would have on this, whether it is possible right now or not. Would have to investigate.

Cavallini Clinic is one of several very good clinics in CR capital city.

Another option: Los Algodones Mexico, right across from Yuma Arizona. ZILLIONS of dentists, much much cheaper than U.S., big dental tourism spot. I have not vetted them, but you could look into it. Stay at motel 6 in Yuma, drive a few miles to border, walk across.

PS: forgot to mention my new choppers look GREAT (movie-star smile), and function great. Eat raw carrots, apples, chewy meat, anything I want. Before I went I was down to cottage cheese, smoothies and the like.

I have a friend who had extensive dental work done in Los Algodones and it was as outstanding as your experience in CR. I'm considering having some veneers done there next year. Depending on travel restrictions.

check out the cost in foreign countries you'd like to travel to, sometimes you can get a trip and work done for the same price as the work done here or better...

This is the smartest post I have seen on here in a long time.

Slow process over 20 years. Restorations falling apart, bad teeth getting worse and worse, and no money to fix. Actually I DID almost have the money (or could have pulled it together) if I had known about overseas option. U.S. dentists are just outrageous.

I paid $500 just for an evaluation, to get the $55,000 quote for my work. $500 would almost have paid for a whole freaking implant (now $650 each at Cavallini)!

With U.S. dentists you practically have to pay to sit in the waiting room, for God's sake.

An interesting aside on this is that modern implants are really NO BIG DEAL AT ALL, they do them in a few SECONDS. Most of mine were in before I knew what was happening.
There is absolutely no reason to charge $thousands$ for implants.

Funny enough, I am doing the same thing except the big stuff will be done next week unless they lock us down again :)

I mean, of course skill of surgeon is very important, and what he/she DOES in those few seconds is vitally important. It has to be right. They deserve to be paid well. Just not $thousands$. That is a ripoff.

... And then adjust to fresh wind and get the never seen before 3th teeth regrowth?

What did you think of Costa Rica, Gadfly? We're older people looking for a 2nd option if war breaks out in the US (we'd just be in the way). It looks like a pretty well run country esp by South American standards.

I was ALWAYS a prepper.

As I hit my 60s, I resolved to get everything fixed for the long run because I was not sure what the future would bring.

I had several surgeries completed as well as permanent implant dental work. Cost me a LOT of money, but it was well spent.

I also purchased a small farm so that my wife and I are almost totally self-sufficient.

Since the thread on the Wuhan Virus started last January, I was warned and passed the warning on to friends and family.

We prepped to stay home for a long time if necessary. I have not set foot in any kind of store or restaurant since Feb. 2020.

On the plus side, we are saving a LOT of money because we cook everything at home. My biggest expense is hay and grain for my cows and chickens.

Good call! I started mine last November and just finished getting ALL NEW teeth. It took over a year and cost $16K. And now I don't have to worry about dying from infection during a time of crisis. AND I CAN EAT AGAIN, YIPPIE!

But the real blessing is getting off all the med's, most importantly the pain med's. Being on those and going thru withdrawals during a crisis would be a death sentence.
