You got it or you didn't.Frank was an awesome guy.

Zappa was an overrated try-hard. He had some skill at composing but his guitar playing sounded pretty bad in most cases. Like a hack trying to show off but lacking the skill to do it convincingly. It became even more apparent when Vai toured with him; Steve had a much more fluid, clear technique. Zappa's voice and delivery are awful, right up there with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. Like a mildly retarded individual speaking over a soundtrack. I figure he had a (((degenerate))) streak in him to write so many disgusting, filthy songs and peddle them to kids under the guise of "free speech." He started out trying to write meaningful, relevant music in the hippie culture but I guess they didn't accept him and it put a chip on his shoulder so he began relying on mockery and satire.

I stopped being a steely dan fan the SECOND I watched jeff skunk baxter stand in front of a podium explaining in great detail his work with general al grey and the "war gaming" exercises they were doing.....

Zappa was "allowed" to say some things here and there, but he never gave any kind of full story, that's for sure.
