Hey it’s been a roller coaster for sometime. Other than the masks and lockdowns I have enjoyed a slower pace of life. And I like going to restaurants and having some space between each other. Also have excuses now to not see people I rather not be around. :0) It’s going to be interesting going forward. I try not to look back. That makes life difficult. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead. It’s not all doom and gloom.

I’ve started a garden.

People have roosters where I live. Love to hear them crowing.

Well, first I 1000% agree with you that they act like spoiled children. I had to grow up with a coven of them over at one of the ivy leagues. Literal nightmare.

I recommend those who have a garden, get things fenced in. Put carpet tack board around the upper ledges to keep "cats" out. Choose strong materials. They'll cut right through a wire fence. I am saying this from EXPERIENCE. If you can do moveable pots, do so. If you can put potted evergreens around your garden to obstruct view, you might want to.

My various small plants have been getting sunburned, and I live in the midwest, so something is off with that.

Moveable plants are best. Grow lights will make the feds come knocking, thinking you're doing 420.

I'm too concerned to do a serious garden, as it would make me a target and mark me as some sort of a prepper. There aren't many gardens in my town. Those with obvious gardens are setting themselves up if things get really crazy.

For the Chickens question: Put them up at night, safely. Put them in Chicken tractors during the day if high predator area. Otherwise, consider getting a dog kennel and using hardware cloth at least but weld mesh is best on the outside, and house them during the evening with a complete roof for when the predators are worst. Beware of Opossum and raccoon especially. They will murder a chicken even if they can't get it out of your enclosure.

Chicken wire with tent stakes, three feet inside, and one foot outside with landscape timbers should be enough to keep a predator the size of a dog out, but . . . pitbulls and dogs raised by shitty owners will be more challenging. They keep going if they can't get in, if they want to kill badly enough. You can get one of those meco cameras that are movement triggered and keep a shotgun handy, and that will help some, or you can put big pieces of rip rap on your chicken wire on the ground.

Ah and that's three feet not down but across. Spike the ground under the fence every few feet to keep diggers out too. That's the reason for the tent stakes. We live next door to pitbulls, so I planted austrees (hybrid willow) every few and made a living fence that makes it a pain in the ass for the dogs. We keep it at about eight feet tall. The roots keep the dogs out, but we also keep riprap along the edges of the fence.

The raccoon climbed over my 7 foot, partially buried fence, and took out 5 hens in one night. The opossum reached thru the (previous) chain link fence. Snakes got in too but no evidence they did anything but unsettle the hens and scare the crap out of me. At night the only good solution is to lock them up. During the day roaming dogs, cats, large birds of prey, and brave nocturnal animals (skunks, opossums, etc.) are still threats. Love having chickens but no solution is fool proof.
