That's why it's a near-impossible topic to discuss.

They just got married back in the day. Promised each to the other for life. There are also situations where a legal contract is just not a possibility. God honors the heart. In many countries there is no legal involvement with courthouse etc. Yet they choose a wife or husband. If you're a guy in the US or Europe and you get married you're basically playing Russian roulette. There is so much incentive for a woman to screw you over, you're such an easy target. The government badically paints a big target on your back saying "divorce me".
