They just got married back in the day. Promised each to the other for life. There are also situations where a legal contract is just not a possibility. God honors the heart. In many countries there is no legal involvement with courthouse etc. Yet they choose a wife or husband. Marriage is an institution of God and has nothing to do with humon govt. Govt regulation of marriage is just more big govt overreach and people replacing God with govt.
