Nightmare on Zuckerberg Street? Facebook wants to make sure you have the right friends with hyperlocal ‘Neighborhoods’ feature

The multi-billion-dollar social media platform Facebook has announced the debut of a new super-local feature called “Neighborhoods,” aimed at challenging hyperlocal social media networks like Nextdoor and “making new friends.”

Rather than simply alerting friends halfway around the world to what their internet pen pals are doing, Facebook has vowed to inform nearby users via a new and improved algorithm if it thinks the pair might be compatible – a semi-creepy feature that could either cement actual friendships or foment algorithmic stalking.

another freaky scenario would be if everyone on my street were all in on it, and we wern't. Which they would find suspicious and anti social, and give them all a platform to gossip.. Its already bad enough here!

Facebook is so damn filled with targeted ads these days, I can barely tolerate it. They saw that I liked eagle watching on YouTube. Now, in addition to all the damn ads, they try to show me all these different bird live feeds. If I wanted to look at bird live feeds I’d go to YouTube! It’s ridiculous. Facebook will kill itself trust me.

Fuck Nextdoor. I tried to report on suspicious activity in my neighborhood and I wasn't allowed to describe the persons skin color.

I love how when I buy something I'm buried in ads for that product. Guess what idiots, I already bought what I needed and don't need to buy it again so piss off.

That is absolutely not true and demostrates a total lack of understanding as to how modern techonology and social media tracking functions. Even if you say no, they're still tracking you anyway. This is something that's been repeatedly exposed even in the mainstream media. Regardless, most people opt in without ever even knowing it or understanding what they're agreeing to when they do it. Above all, this type of "feature" will be mandatory in the long run and a kids version will be created just like everything else with social media. By the long run I mean within the next few years guaranteed. Facebook is now the largest contributer to global marketing and facial recognition databases in the world with other social media platforms scrambling to catch up and governments doing nothing about it. Law enforcement buys data through contracts with "Facebook partnets" in order to feed it into their own databases. It's never been legal for social media, marketing companies or Law enforcement to use these databases where minors are concerned or use them without consent but they've been doing both for over a decade now anyway.

Speaking of consent and "opt in", ever read that terms of service? The co-operate with law enforcement and government agencies part specifically? The minute you sign up for or log into Facebook, Twitter, Reddit or any other form of scoial media including video sites like Youtube and search engines like Google you're opting in to allow them to track you and share your data with law enforcement and the government. That's your consent, they don't actually require any further permission and they're only asking you to make you think you're in control. It's the same where marketing companies and facial recognition databases are concerned, you've already consented because these entities are "Facebook partners" and affiliated with them. You've already given up your freddom of choice and so have your kids. There's no legal framework in North America that requires them to even stop doing it either. Trump wanted to put measures in place but was stopped by politicians on both sides of the isle at every turn because they're in bed with tech companies. As for the topic in the OP, if you lived through they MySpace era then you know this "feature" will end up a privacy, safety and security nightmare just like social media itself. It's already a foregone conclusion it's just the majority of people don't really care. Then they wonder how they can attend a protest in Washington DC and have the cops show up on their doorstep a month later with a warrant.

Could see a rise in marriage break ups after being forced into quarantine and added financial pressures and uncertainty. The aim is to destroy the family nucleus so I'm betting this is something in line with that.

Or if you want to go really creepy, is a.i so artificial? Even the makers are flummoxed to some of things it's doing. Along comes this a.i and says 'look who you could be with...'. A.i is already prevalent on dating apps, it's already deciding who we should be with.

The purpose of features like this& "dark" messenger mode on Facebook, is simple. To destroy families.

A lot about Nextdoor depends on how your neighborhood commissar, I mean facilitator, chooses for your area.

If I even write indirectly about Covid or mention anything medical, up pops a message saying it's important to be factual and don't I want to say Covid explicitly, or something like that. But I can ignore the warning and my messages have posted anyway.

Nextdoor has been useful for community organizing. We may have stopped a plan in a nearby town to move all its neighborhood elementary schools to the city area (and probably convert the school campuses to homeless shelters or Covid quarantine sites or something -- this was just before Covid hit).

I'm in several groups that meet there. That's the only reason I have a FB page.

Who is still using FB? I mean, seriously...





I never used it, and never will
