I honestly don't think it's a matter of smarts, it's just about how deeply you invest yourself in a particular narrative. The key to sanity is to never invest yourself so deep in anything you can't afford to cut your losses and run when things turn sour.

This holds true both for money investments and emotional investments.

Problem is, some people put their entire heart and soul on the line for Trump without reservations. These people can't afford to back out no matter how hard Trump fails them. It would destroy them.
