Car rental prices - to the moon!
I had to rent a car in the Orlando area and they quoted me $140 a day. That’s without insurance or the extras!

Has anyone else noticed these crazy prices?

Two years ago, I paid $45 a day.

I was pricing out moving trucks recently. The prices were absurd. They wanted a dollar per mile as well.

It'd be cheaper to go buy a box truck, use it then sell it when you're done.

That’s what I ended up doing. After giving Enterprise too much money, I ended up buying a nice used car just for Florida, as I travel here frequently on business. I am parking it at a friend’s house when I am not here.

The last time I visited here, I had a $1200 rental bill. I’d rather have a slightly used car that I can sell when I am done.

I rented a car and drove to my daughter's new house about 1/2 hour away from the airport. Two days. I think it was $300. I didn't drive it at all while there. I was kicking myself later for not just taking a cab, but I didn't realize she was that close to the airport.

Re: Car rental prices - to the moon!
I moved last November. I simply bought an enclosed trailer that time to move. I should have done that years ago. There's many times I could have used one instead of paying to have large things bought delivered. Resale value is pretty good if you keep it clean and well maintained. Paid $4k for a 10 foot one with rear drop down ramp door, and with additional side door up near the front. Got a nice darker colored military green one.

Its everywhere the same... WORLDWIDE!

Solution: Don't rent a car. Let all those asshole car rental companies go bankrupt.

Yes, at the beginning of the pandemic last year, rental car companies sold a lot of their stock because travel business came to a standstill. A year later, people are traveling again and suddenly they don't have enough cars, a fact which is complicated by a global chip shortage, also stemming from lockdowns. It's why timber was so expensive. It's not that the resource is scarce, just that the supply chain was so badly disrupted.

I just checked Houston IAH airport. I can rent a midsize like a Malibu for $82 a week. Not per day. Per week.

If I rent it from a local rental location, it jumps to $300 per week...

A friend of mine was talking about this so just for laughs I plugged in for a week, picking up in Bozeman, Mt. (thought about going to Yellowstone) during the week of July 4th..... Wait for it... $4500 for the week!!! I didn’t shop it... I’m sure I could have found something for a little less... but not enough to make a difference....
World has gone mad....I could buy a decent used car for that!

For in town retail moves, it's been $0.79-0.89 for as long as I can remember. Business rentals have always been $0.20-$0.30.

It's a supply/demand issue and with all the fucking deadbeats getting stimulus checks, part of the high rates is literally to weed out shit bags that will damage and not return our shit.

It's not uhaul I work at, but yeah.... Rental rates are higher than giraffe pussy because A) there are very few new cars to purchases causing increased maintenance costs (never had to do brakes, tires etc when you're pulling stuff out of fleet at 25,000 miles B) these companies don't really make much profit on the actually rentals... Its all about the sales of the used inventory.

$19/day and $0.99/mile is pretty reasonable if you're doing 20-30 miles.

Hey bro? How far was the move? If it was local, Lowes still rents their full size cargo vans for $19 for 75 minutes plus $5 for each additional 15 minutes. No mileage restrictions and just gas back up when finished.

Depot also rents 1 ton flatbed pickups for the same price.

Just a thought for the future. Hope it helps take out the sting if it's practical for your needs.

When Covid stopped all travel, the car rental companies sold off their cars to survive.

Now they have a car shortage.
And Ford etc can't sell them replacement new cars due to the lack of semiconductors.

But there should be a lot of used cars out there.

You help them by paying such ridiculous prices because the more of these purchases are made the more it empowers them to keep on charging these fees

Oh there are! And plenty of them too. BUT even the used prices have skyrocketed!

I bought a 2006 CRV AWD new and use it mostly for winter driving. I just threw it up on one of those "WTF is my car worth" sites? Last year the offers ranged from about $4Gs to $5500. Quite regularly these days I'm getting dealers offering $7500!

Edit for numerous typographical errors.
