The question "why do you need that gun" is the wrong question to ask. All people have a right to guns, except violent felons. I would like to see all people walking around with guns period - including park rangers and everybody else!

Federal Parks Police and law-enforcement rangers— both state and federal—have to meet all of the same training/hiring requirements as any other sworn officers. Those are the ones you see with firearms and driving in patrol vehicles. You are confusing them with the whole other class of park rangers (not LEO) that do the other work and maintenance in parks, like leading tour groups.

The guy who cleans the restrooms in the morning is a Park Service employee but he's not a ranger. The rangers are all armed these days, and they do NOT have to meet all the same requirements as police.

Huge numbers of normal people are "armed" as well, and they don't have to go through the kind of training that police do. We live by the second amendment. Shall not be infringed!
