An article in a prestigious research journal details a story of Anvive Lifesciences Inc.’s CG376 as a potential treatment for the virus that causes Covid-19. Anvive, based in Long Beach, California, signed a deal in 2018 with Kansas State University’s Institute for Commercialization to license the drug, which was developed by scientists at K-State and Wichita State University. The original plan was to develop CG376 to treat feline infectious peritonitis. The viral disease affects domestic and wild cats. While it typically is harmless, it can spread throughout cat’s bodies and cause death. The cat disease is caused by a coronavirus, with the drug aimed at reducing the virus’s ability to replicate in the body. The hope is that this same process also will reduce the load of coronavirus in humans who have contracted Covid-19.
