Therefore I've been looking also now that the batteries are getting bigger and less expensive. I do like the Tongsheng TSDZ2 Kit w/860C with the open source firmware. [link to www.eco-ebike.com (secure)] Seems to me the mid drive is the way to go for hill climbing and off road. The TSDZ2 seams to be more efficient than the Banfang mid-drive. The TSDZ2's open source firmware allows you to make many modifications for your style of riding if you are into tinkering. A lot of good info here; [link to endless-sphere.com (secure)] |

Here's the truth: In the 1970's an electric bike used a car battery, went 25 mph and had a range of 100 miles. It cost the cost of a battery plus the cost of a motor more. Less than twice the cost of a cheap bike. Now electric bikes cost 20X the price of a normal bike, have a range of at most 15 miles, and don't go any faster. RIPOFF. All the good designs are in the TRASH. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80703301 United Kingdom 08/09/2021 04:08 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | SurRon or X1 Enduro from Luna Cycles. Best deal hands down. I have both. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80007429 Hard to beat those for the perf/price ratio for offroad bikes imo, the onyx rcr isnt bad for light trails either, and as a commmuter the super 73's are popular, but he sur-ron is the standard imo. You put a bac8000 and a better battery on that sur ron and its 100% a fully capable electric dirtbike. |

You are right about ebikes being expensive, but the cost is up front, if you have a mountain bike style ebike and aleady have solar at home they are essentially costless to run, aside from basic maintence, ie punchures, chains, brake pads, pads are like 10 dollars every 1000 miles. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41206840 The guy who sugested the x1 is onto something, but because its full susp setting up racks is a bit of a pain, a trailer could help, if you get a folding solar panel and a charge converter/controller you essentially have functionally infinite range too, you are only going to be limited by mechnical maintence, like changing chains/ brakes ect every few thousand miles. The bad news is its expensive, but the cost is up front, the running costs are literally cents a day. |

The most popular and ubiquitous is the Bafang BBSHD unit. A company in Calif named Luna Cycle packages a kit with all sorts of hot rod options to turn a mild mid drive into a wild mid drive. You need to be certain the bike takes the kit, the bottom bracket or crank bearing must accept it. Luna and BaFang have a list and videos how to tell which bikes will accept it. Luna also has pre-built bikes. Buying from a US based company helps with phone support. They are game changers if you have commutes less than 20-30 miles a day, for americans i can understand that they might be a bit hit and miss, because its not unusual for them to have to drive 100 miles to the next big town, but 100 miles in the UK is like 1/6th the country. Most big cities are within 25 miles of each other in the uk, an ebike/emoto is a viable alternative to a car here, i admit its probably a terrible option for somebody statside if they have to travel halfway accross the state. Mines 100% off grid, and i am able to recharge mine via solar, i get around 80 miles from two batteries on full power assit, id easily get 3x that in eco mode, but i dont ever need to cycle 200miles in a day, thats extreme outside of an emergency, but its possible. I'm waiting for really bad winter weather so i can test out worse case scenario with lowest battery cap and snow everywhere. I have rode my electric bike 15 miles with no power before, and it sucks, but its possible. SHTF i have no doubt i can do 100miles per day mixing roads/paths/lanes and conserving power, if i can get a mobile solar setup going, thats better than a horse by far. My solar setup is not portable though, thats my next step really, and the right bikepacking gear, so i can ride 25-40 miles up into the mountains and wild camp, no car, no noise, no fuel, shit no roads if i want. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 82574513 Canada 05/02/2022 08:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If you want to lose a few pounds and have fun while doing t, get an ebike! if you want to climb hills and have more fun, the big store bikes just won't do it; government regs limited their power so low that the bigger hills, 15-19 degrees are not possible. An government limited anemic ebike is the way to go if you plan on installing an upgrade kit: In any case you need a controller than can output 1000-1500 watts depending on your weight. The motors are generally over designed but you'll need a 750-1000 watt motor. Both should be capable of running at 52v (see below) The powerful bike needs powerful brakes so hydraulic are the best; they even make mechanical calipers that have the hydraulics built in for an easy conversion. Last but certainly not least, the standard ebike clamshell battery just isn't going to do it. You need a 52v 20-24 amp-hour battery to make all this work. It's a big battery and needs to be mounted on the front downtube to maintain the front to back balance of the bike. Get one with fat tires, 4" wide and it will handle any kind of terrain. That's the essentials! |
