Any eBike riders here? I want one.
Looking for advice. I want a mountain style electric bike. From what I've been reading a mid-drive motor seems to best for uphill climbs. I'm not going crazy on any tracks but I would like something that's great for trails and road with racks to carry gear.

Any advice would be awesome.

I try to ride 1 to 2 hours, 10 to 20 easy miles a day. Therefore I've been looking also now that the batteries are getting bigger and less expensive. I do like the Tongsheng TSDZ2 Kit w/860C with the open source firmware.

Seems to me the mid drive is the way to go for hill climbing and off road. The TSDZ2 seams to be more efficient than the Banfang mid-drive. The TSDZ2's open source firmware allows you to make many modifications for your style of riding if you are into tinkering. A lot of good info here;

Re: Any eBike riders here? I want one.
They are all a ripoff.

Here's the truth:

In the 1970's an electric bike used a car battery, went 25 mph and had a range of 100 miles. It cost the cost of a battery plus the cost of a motor more. Less than twice the cost of a cheap bike.

Now electric bikes cost 20X the price of a normal bike, have a range of at most 15 miles, and don't go any faster.

RIPOFF.

All the good designs are in the TRASH.

I hate to rain on your parade, but all the electric bikes nowadays are phenomonal ripoffs. However, the gas bicycle conversions are an absolute steal. It's the reverse of the 70's.

Pay $200 for a gas kit and slap it on whatever you already have. You'll be pleased.

Simply bad ass

46mph and can easily go 50miles on charge in eco mode

I can keep up with my buddies 250 on the trails. Put a 64 tooth on there and it will climb like a billygoat

Your best bet is to get this for your existing MB

its quite pricy, but about 3x cheaper than getting a whole one. plus its a mid drive which is 100% better than a front or rear hub

Hard to beat those for the perf/price ratio for offroad bikes imo, the onyx rcr isnt bad for light trails either, and as a commmuter the super 73's are popular, but he sur-ron is the standard imo.

You put a bac8000 and a better battery on that sur ron and its 100% a fully capable electric dirtbike.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80691962

I frequently do double that, up a 20deg hill in -10c you might have a point, but basic off road trails and suburbs, im getting 30 miles on a charge that costs like 20c. You are right about ebikes being expensive, but the cost is up front, if you have a mountain bike style ebike and aleady have solar at home they are essentially costless to run, aside from basic maintence, ie punchures, chains, brake pads, pads are like 10 dollars every 1000 miles.

The guy who sugested the x1 is onto something, but because its full susp setting up racks is a bit of a pain, a trailer could help, if you get a folding solar panel and a charge converter/controller you essentially have functionally infinite range too, you are only going to be limited by mechnical maintence, like changing chains/ brakes ect every few thousand miles.

The bad news is its expensive, but the cost is up front, the running costs are literally cents a day.

Make one. Get an old rigid or full suspension mountain bike and add the mid drive kit. The most popular and ubiquitous is the Bafang BBSHD unit. A company in Calif named Luna Cycle packages a kit with all sorts of hot rod options to turn a mild mid drive into a wild mid drive.

You need to be certain the bike takes the kit, the bottom bracket or crank bearing must accept it. Luna and BaFang have a list and videos how to tell which bikes will accept it. Luna also has pre-built bikes. Buying from a US based company helps with phone support.

the wife wanted one as she is now 56 but loves cycling she has a few mountain bikes a Mongoose A Scott And a Marin, but we live on the hilly Pennines the backbone of hills through England So she purchased from Ali Baba a electric 36v 500w cycle it heavy its like trying to lift 2 mountain bikes together.... but she absolutely loves it...... rides about 15 to 20 miles a day, the bike is called a "Samebike m-nine", the only criticism is the battery charger runs real hot, so we purchased a battery charger off eBay with an internal fan what a difference, and the wife's a cheeky bastard, she rang the seller, and told her that the battery would not charge, so they sent her a whole new battery !! so she runs them alternately it has disc brakes rear hub motor a digital LCD display of speed, mileage, and some other info, and it fold in half too
the bike cost £699 the charger was £18.99 and Denise has clocked up over 600 miles on it up to now.

They are game changers if you have commutes less than 20-30 miles a day, for americans i can understand that they might be a bit hit and miss, because its not unusual for them to have to drive 100 miles to the next big town, but 100 miles in the UK is like 1/6th the country.

Most big cities are within 25 miles of each other in the uk, an ebike/emoto is a viable alternative to a car here, i admit its probably a terrible option for somebody statside if they have to travel halfway accross the state. Mines 100% off grid, and i am able to recharge mine via solar, i get around 80 miles from two batteries on full power assit, id easily get 3x that in eco mode, but i dont ever need to cycle 200miles in a day, thats extreme outside of an emergency, but its possible. I'm waiting for really bad winter weather so i can test out worse case scenario with lowest battery cap and snow everywhere. I have rode my electric bike 15 miles with no power before, and it sucks, but its possible. SHTF i have no doubt i can do 100miles per day mixing roads/paths/lanes and conserving power, if i can get a mobile solar setup going, thats better than a horse by far.

My solar setup is not portable though, thats my next step really, and the right bikepacking gear, so i can ride 25-40 miles up into the mountains and wild camp, no car, no noise, no fuel, shit no roads if i want.

building one from a cheap regular bike is a good idea to save cash, those bafang motors are great, but i would absolutely 100% suggest starting with a high quality, very strong frame, upgrading the brakes on any self build bike to at least mechnical disk brakes, bare minimum, really hydralic discs are the go too, if your bike does more than 25mph, stopping a 175lb person on a 50lb bike with a 25lb backpack on... rim brakes are not good enough imo.

In Baltimore they get jumped at intersections and beat up while the bike is stolen and ridden off.

E scooters too. Also motorscooters.

In a lily white suburbs, they might be an option for awhile.

Re: Any eBike riders here? I want one.
If you want to lose a few pounds and have fun while doing t,

get an ebike!

if you want to climb hills and have more fun, the big store bikes just won't do it; government regs limited their power so low that the bigger hills, 15-19 degrees are not possible.

An government limited anemic ebike is the way to go if you plan on installing an upgrade kit:

In any case you need a controller than can output 1000-1500 watts depending on your weight. The motors are generally over designed but you'll need a 750-1000 watt motor. Both should be capable of running at 52v (see below)

The powerful bike needs powerful brakes so hydraulic are the best; they even make mechanical calipers that have the hydraulics built in for an easy conversion.

Last but certainly not least, the standard ebike clamshell battery just isn't going to do it. You need a 52v 20-24 amp-hour battery to make all this work. It's a big battery and needs to be mounted on the front downtube to maintain the front to back balance of the bike.

Get one with fat tires, 4" wide and it will handle any kind of terrain.

That's the essentials!
