You have a point. That music does not lend itself well to middle-aged men trying to bed single middle-aged (or younger) women, if that is what yacht guys are going for (and of course they are!). But it is appropriate for (apparently!) fringe, extreme behavior.

Yeah, I was going to say.... They used to call this "Folk" or "Easy Listening." Some of it is pretty lame, but I think this was also the antithesis of disco at the time.

This is one of my favorite songs ever. I can see why it may have made this list, as it reminds me of Waikiki and hordes of drunk middle aged tourists. Regardless of how overplayed it might be, it still brings a smile to my heart.

I played this song after two of my cats died to ease the pain. I wouldn't call this yacht music, but rather healing music.

You guys are rippin' on the second greatest genre of music EVER! The first being NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal).

There was no offense taken and no apology necessary. :) I can see why it would be in the thread, regardless of my own feelings for the song and the singer.

I have to admit that I like a lot of these songs in this thread. In the late 70s, I couldn't wait to be an adult. I fantasized about a California lifestyle a la "Three's Company", listening to this music in my own apartment with a great boyfriend while I studied to be a vet at USC and lived an exotic life beyond my boring 12 year old self stuck in the Vermont countryside. The music was always "grown up" in my mind.

I have a playlist with a lot of these songs called "Summer Nights in the 70s Kitsch". I didn't realize it was referred to as yacht music now, but I am a bit out of the loop when it comes to terms relating to popular culture. That said, aside form playing it now and then at home, I would probably relegate it to a group of middle aged friends. 80% of my music collection is from outside the US, so for me these songs are not overplayed (unlike "classic rock").

I agree. Maybe we should make a playlist for those facing military tribunals for treason while they are hanging out at Gitmo waiting for sentencing. Hey Micky by Tony someone isn't yacht music, but would definitely make the list.
