It's federal law that group health plans can't charge more for one employee than for another employee, including but not limited to pre-existing conditions and lifestyle choices.

Otherwise companies could charge gay employees more money because they are 10x more likely to contract HIV/AIDS, and diabetic employees are 20x more likely to require extensive medical treatment for complications arising from their diabetes and poor eating habits.

Insurance is based on the law of large numbers. You need the healthy ones to outnumber the sick ones to pay for the ones that can't work with higher premiums.

I agree but our company does charge $50 per month extra if you are a smoker and want the corporate health plan.
