Canary Islands Prez doesn't sound too optimistic saying that the worst is yet to come...

[link to www.express.co.uk (secure)]

"The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has warned the "worst is yet to come" after the worst day of volcanic activity so far.

He admitted today that social and economic reconstruction in La Palma when the volcanic eruption ends would be "a tremendous challenge".

It would be perhaps one of the most important on the islands in recent decades, according to the President, which is why he warned that "the worst is yet to come".
"

I can't even imagine how they could pull that off in the near future. People will not be so confident about returning after this settles, even if this is the worst to happen. It's a shame, but I wouldn't blame them.

Yeah not sure I’d wanna live in or near a ridge where you know there is an active volcano and that more could open up or that the landmass itself isn’t entirely stable

Seriously. We have tornadoes from time to time, but it's hit and miss and there's NO predicting them far in advance. I'll stick with swirling winds over volcanoes any day of the week.

Hi from Scotland everyone, not sure what’s the done thing so apologies if this is wrong but I’ll say hello here. Only been viewing as a non-member since about 2005 so that’s not technically lurking lol.

Great thread, it’s a real one.

I really, really don’t like these current quakes under the ridge, have relatives in NY and Naples FL, keeping my fingers crossed for everyone potentially involved here, Duncan.
 Quoting: The guitar playing gardener

The thing about NY and the surrounding Great Lakes region, is they haven't discovered the volcano that was responsible for evaporating the sea water, forming the vast salt deposits, and heated the water allowing coral reefs to flourish.

I just got done watching the History Channel, regarding how the Great Lakes were formed, and I can now see why people who may have evacuated off of La Palma at the beginning of the eruption may have returned, thinking this eruption is not much different from all the previous ones. Any one of those eruptions could have took off into a much larger eruption.

In the Great Lakes video, rock formations were mis-identified as evidence of glacial activity, when I think they look more like they're volcanic. Such as, the great weight of the glacial ice, as it flowed down from the north, it gouged out the over 1000 foot deep lake. But the lake is level, with a great dip in the middle, same as the other lakes, except for Superior Lake, which has pumice floating along the shore, and vast amounts of iron rich ore in Minnesota, which I have seen personally. In fact it is very difficult to use a CB radio up there, because of all the iron nearby.

Oh, the video also stated that the enormous salt caverns under Lake Erie are 1,700 feet under the lake. Kinda difficult to evaporate water that far below sea level. Gonna be interesting when they find the volcanic system that created all that.
 Quoting: The Starbuckian

I'll have to watch that one. Thanks for bringing it up.

I had forgotten about a conversation I had one here, years ago, with ST in BG. The alien guy? He posted that there was an inactive volcano under a golf course in Bowling Green. I got mad at him because I grew up in the area and never before or since had heard of it, BUT, I've never forgotten about it. I've never found verification and I kind of forgot about it, but now that we've moved back up here, I'll have to do some digging again.

We never learned about possible volcanic activity here in school, just the glacial theories, mostly because of the Glacial Grooves on Kelley's Island. We used to be able to walk on them and check them out. Last time we were over there, they were fenced off and a group was studying them.
 Quoting: Texan Buckeye

Maybe bring a 4 foot level, or even a laser level to see how little elevation is gained going north, within those grooves. Also look for fumerole artifacts. In the road cuts, you can see evidence of volcanic ash as the rain erodes the soil they cut through to make the road. For me, there's a layer of exposed ash laden soil near a place formerly called Carriage Hill, which is within Athens. After seeing the erosion of ash laden soil that was erupted by Mt St Helens, it's easy to distinguish.

Some tree species can do better than others in different soil types, which can help you to see if the soil changes over an area. For instance, in my region of Ohio, there is a particular tree of the white oak group, forgot the name at the moment, that likes limestone, and only grows within the exposed layer on that hillside.

In reference to the video I cited above, we have dolomite nodules in the clay at the top of the ridge here. But our brine water begins at 500 feet down in the ground. Fresh water is on top of that.

Our oil bearing Clinton Sandstone formation is at 3000 feet down, here, and gradually comes to the surface in West Virginia. Many rock climbers like to clamber all over it. I think it's down by the New River Gorge.

I had to stop worrying about our nuclear plant decades ago. When I saw the evac plan, I decided to grab my 2 littles at the time, and go sit on the back step to watch the fireworks. The plans were SO bad, there was no way to even get to the open roads in time. I live a little farther away and in the opposite direction now, but I still feel the same way about it.

At what point do the people there get evacuated?
I'd be long f-ing gone already myself.
Worst case scenario or best case. I love to gamble, but not with my life or my loved ones and pets.
I see a lot of dream posts going on.
