I lived overseas for awhile, and a friend of mine who had experience as a “technical writer” kept applying for jobs that he was more than qualified for.

They’d require him to pass a “test” whereby he needed to find and correct errors in a (supposedly hypothetical) instruction manual.

He has good skills, and he kept replying to these with a sincere effort, not seeming to realize what was happening. I saw his responses and they were of good quality.

The long and short of this is that they were essentially getting applicants with native English skills to rewrite their instruction manuals (piece by piece) without compensating them!
