It's kind of fun to do the impossible. User ID: 78268903 United States 10/12/2021 06:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I use Zander ID theft plan. I have had it for years and it is recommended by Dave Ramey. It wont help you now as you did not have it when incident occurred. They may give you advice on e you sign up. I pay about 72 bucks a year for it. My daughter and son in law had similar situation as you are in. She called IRS and was able to get it straightened out eventually. They never thought she would lose. Now they all lose. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 80974920 United States 10/12/2021 11:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Had filed extension on 2020 taxes. Received bill.from IRS last week for 2020 taxes, owed $4,300. I hadn't filed yet Quoting: humbird Have a great enrolled agent accountant. Turns out I owe $760, but when we filed, it was kicked out. Someone already filed in my name, who had my ss#. Probably a fake claim for refund sent to their bank via routing number. My accountant reported the fraud.but says my ss# is maybe compromised and i should have my credit checked etc. Should I do Lifelock? ( hate that name) or does anyone else.have a suggestion? Much thanks in advance. Always keep your credit report locked when not seeking new credit. The thief got your SSN from somewhere, and if they know where you live they can file all sorts of things. |

Once the fraud alert goes into effect you will be sent a post card in the mail letting you know that they also have contacted the other credit reporting agencies in regards to the fraud alert. What you are doing is freezing your credit so no one can take out a loan or credit card in your name using your social security number. If someone tries to use your use your social security to establish new credit, your will be called, and they will be blocked. Make sure you cancel all of your active credit cards and let them know you are dealing with identity theft. Request that they issue you new credit cards with new numbers. You also can file a police report. I had this happen, and once I froze my credit, I have not had problems. Here is the number:(800) 525-6285 Once you have placed a fraud alert or active duty alert, you'll be able to verify its status through your my Equifax account. You can call Equifax at (800) 525-6285 or send a request by mail to place a fraud alert or active duty alert. It takes about a week for you to receive the postcard in the mail. Hold on to it, as a reminders to when it expires. As far as life lock, I never went with them because of all the information they required, and I feared they could be hacked, also you have to pay. Placing a fraud alert is FREE. Last Edited by Foxy Pomeranian on 10/12/2021 11:38 PM Foxy |

User ID: 80413252 United States 10/13/2021 12:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Tax guy here. We had one of these case back in like 2011/2012, and no one knew what to do. This was prior to the ID Theft Pins. Fast forward to about 2015/2016, there were probably about 1 to 3 million or more of these cases in the US, so it definitely was more prevalent of a problem. We had probably 30 to 40 cases those years; super frustrating. I’d say we might have one or two of these now. Anyway, in each of the cases I’ve seen, maybe one or two clients had their actual identity compromised. The others clients just fell victim to a one time ID theft issue only regarding their tax account, and not their credit account. My point, don’t freak out, these are common occurrences and the IRS has done absolutely nothing about it. Millions of dollars in refunds were sent to one address in Atlanta GA a few years ago before the IRS “caught on” to the scam this Nigerian was running. Unbelievable. Your tax dollars hard at work!!! But, the prudent thing to do is check your credit often and consider getting an ID theft protection service. Texas Dave |
