One of the scariest things I ever did was to skip the major highways and zag across Arkansas back to Tennessee through country back roads. I have never seen the level of blight and poverty I did on that drive, it was truly a dystopian nightmare. You could hear banjos playing through the trees, I was afraid to stop and get gas.
