I don’t know that anything in Polynesia is actually that hairy. Maybe it’s an ancient memory from when Polynesians passed through the area around Indonesia.

They are not worshipping themselves, but a rather a huge hairy deity.

There also several versions for different occasions. Not all versions are challenges, but all are definitely about unity and strength in numbers.

All the ones I have heard have the words

‘Tis death! ‘Tis death! Tis life! Tis life!
Tis death! Tis death! Tis life! Tis life!

Which seems to be about either worship or war, but in the context of the original song, worship.
