Maori's aren't hairy. They are clearly talking about a powerful deity.

"... Behold the hairy man
Who reined in the sun so that it shines
Arise Arise ..."

No I haven't. Doesn't matter they are not talking about themselves. They are talking about a powerful deity who can rein in the sun and make it shine.

I don’t know that anything in Polynesia is actually that hairy. Maybe it’s an ancient memory from when Polynesians passed through the area around Indonesia.

In Māori tradition, the Maero (or Mohoao) are an iwi-atua or supernatural people from Aotearoa. They are sometimes described as giants and they inhabit mountains and forest, particularly in Te Wai Pounamu.[1] Maero are characterised as wild, malevolent and often violent, carrying stone clubs as weapons. They are covered in dark body hair and have long, bony fingers with sharp fingernails. They kill and eat humans and other animals.

Yes. Thank you.

Yes, they clearly believed in these beings and their haka is a form of worship or imitation.

There also several versions for different occasions. Not all versions are challenges, but all are definitely about unity and strength in numbers.

All the ones I have heard have the words

‘Tis death! ‘Tis death! Tis life! Tis life!
Tis death! Tis death! Tis life! Tis life!

Which seems to be about either worship or war, but in the context of the original song, worship.
