NATO and Russia 'No Doubt' May Fight 'Major War' Over Ukraine: Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned on Friday that the Russia-Ukraine war could escalate into a "major" conflict.


Stoltenberg's remarks come more than nine months after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine on February 24, setting off an armed conflict that has been subject to worldwide rebuke over a lack of justification and alleged human rights abuses.

Throughout the conflict, analysts have raised concerns about the potential for spillover into nations that are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Ukraine is not part of the coalition, with apparent corruption being a major roadblock to its membership.

However, Russia expanding the invasion—or mistakingly striking one of Ukraine's neighbors that are part of the organization—would threaten to lead to a wider conflict. Article 5 of NATO's charter states that "an attack against one Ally is considered as an attack against all Allies," meaning an attack against a NATO state could draw a military response by all others.

Russia's main art museum goes up in flames as footage sparks panic in Moscow

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts caught fire this morning, sparking panic in Moscow. Officials revealed that one firefighter was injured while tackling the blaze at the art museum. The Pushkin is the largest museum of European art in Moscow and one of the leading destinations for visitors to the Russian capital.

The building - known as the Lopukhin estate - is currently being used by the Pushkin State Museum.

The two-story old manor house dates back to the late 17th century.

Officials revealed that the man was hospitalised after a ceiling collapsed onto him on the second floor of the building.

It is thought that the ceilings between floors caught fire.

Vladimir Putin had been due to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month. However, in a sign of growing Russian isolation on the world stage, an Indian government source said the meeting has now been abruptly cancelled. The move to cancel the annual face-to-face meeting was taken after veiled threats by Vladimir Putin to use nuclear weapons in the Ukraine war, according to Bloomberg News.

The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported on Dec. 10 that Ukrainian forces struck a concentration of Russian troops in the temporarily occupied part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

According to the General Staff, up to 150 Russian soldiers were injured, and 50 soldiers were taken to a hospital in occupied Melitopol, Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Putin threatens preemptive nuclear strike as war drags on

Vladimir Putin said Russia may shift its nuclear policy to a first strike strategy rather than a defensive one as his war in Ukraine drags on and the West’s concerns about Russia’s ties with Iran grow.

The Russian president made the comment during a summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Friday, where he said he was considering a preemptive strike policy — a strategy he credited to the U.S..

“Speaking about a disarming strike, maybe it’s worth thinking about adopting the ideas developed by our U.S. counterparts, their ideas of ensuring their security,” the Russian strongman said.

Putin went on to say that Russia has already commissioned hypersonic weapons, which the U.S. has thus far not deployed, and now has cruise missiles superior to the American arsenal.
