"Prince Rupert is the closest major North American port to Asia with direct on-dock access to CN’s three coast network. Containers are efficiently transferred between vessel and rail, enhancing Prince Rupert’s transit time advantage. It’s also North America’s deepest natural harbour, capable of handling the world’s largest vessels." Not sure if it can handle bulk traffic commodities (coal, grain, pot ash etc..) though. It would be a logistical nightmare...but do-able |

The railroads have limited alternatives to reroute trains through sections of the impacted region. One shipper said they were hopeful that at least limited service might resume by this coming weekend. Some are however saying that the lines could be disrupted for weeks while the railroads said it was too early to make estimates until they could reach the impacted areas. |

Flooding has halted rail services to and from the Port of Vancouver and also shut all main routes by road, the port said in a statement. It’s not yet known when Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. and Canadian National Railway Co. will be able to re-open their lines, it said. Nearly 1,000 rail cars carrying grain are idled in the Vancouver corridor, according to estimates from Ag Transport Coalition. Advertisement [link to financialpost.com (secure)] |

Thats because the water will have abate. There is a Canadian Railway Operating Rule regarding the movements of trains (well several).. But this one in particular states that trains or engines are forbidden to travel on rail when the top of rail is covered with 3inches or more then of water. So only time will tell. After the water goes down then theres the "small" task of inspections and repairs to the trackage and corresponding infrastructure. Theres gonna be a shitload of miles to be made. Railroaders are gonna make bank! |
