Maybe going in the swimming pool is the safest place? We have the same problem here where I live in Tenn. Not many homes have basements. I'm going to have a small storm shelter installed in the near future. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 80429525 United States 01/16/2022 12:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My best friend is in Cape Coral. Waiting on her to reply to my texts. Quoting: SugarSand I just looked on her FB and yesterday she shared a memory of a tornado in Cape Coral January 15, 2016. So, it's not that unusual this time of year. Hope your friend is okay Sugar. I think it missed most of Cape Coral this time. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 80429525 United States 01/16/2022 12:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Tornadoes happen when cold fronts make their way down to areas heated by the Sun. For tornadoes to hit in Florida is an example of global cooling. The cold front from the Arctic has to make its way all the way to Florida. Quoting: samanthasunflower It's getting colder. Sounds good but yeah true! Tornados are so common here and not usually horrible unless you're in a trailer which is just stupid. Honestly I slept thru the worst of it until my mom woke me up. Even slept thru the alarms. I had a tornado near me Christmas eve I think it was. We still went out and delivered mail in it. Had to case mail in the dark with a headlamp because it knocked the power out. Few years ago had an F1 literally hit down the street from me few houses down at 10pm. Just took out a guys garage. I slept thru it. Didn't lose power. That’s the one I mentioned earlier. I thought the happened 4 weeks ago but you’re right, it was on Christmas Eve. We slept through it and I think woke up like at 7 or 8am and looked out the window and noticed our outdoor trampoline had flipped upside down and broken along with seeing the same thing happen to the neighbor’s trampoline. We just slept through the damage. But after it ended pretty early we went outside to clean the damage. We didn’t lose power but some cable lines fell down a little. |

What's up with that? 22 million people here. Red state. Lots of awake people. If GLP was a left leaning retard site you’d see more people from California and New York. Ha. New York City maybe. Have you been to upstate NY--nothing left leaning about it? ~~*NOT* a very nice kitty!~~ "Plan for the worst, hope for the best, and don't live in fear." |

One robbed his own brother for a 3/4 million dollar house and the other took rona payroll money to buy their half million dollar house. Whatever shit flies their way is deserved. |

Quoting: SugarSand I just looked on her FB and yesterday she shared a memory of a tornado in Cape Coral January 15, 2016. So, it's not that unusual this time of year. OMG how do people survive that area? The daily sunlight did help my depression, I felt better after I lived there for a month; but it's winter and it was to hot for me, 80 everyday but one, so I had to be inside anyway most of the time. The driving almost killed me, the way people drive and the long distances just to go somewhere. I can't even imagine trying to go out at night in that area unless it's just a short drive to your destination. It's not unusual for people to do a 100 mile round trip just to go to dinner or a nightclub, it's insane. Ironically not a great area for serious swimmers; it's all outdoor pools and mostly leisure pools. The Gulf is not accessible in most of the area, it's swampy. You can't swim in the bays or canals, there are gators. The area is a fisherman's and boaters paradise, but not so great for swimmers. There is only one indoor pool in the entire area. The one pool I swam at was so lame and would be far to small and hot for daily living. I just bought a full body swimsuit because I'm going back to Florida in a few days. I have to find somewhere I can survive there, which means living near an indoor or shaded lap pool. Or at least a lap pool large enough. I miss having my own lane to myself. Ironically some very small towns have enormous Olympic lap pools, so I may have to choose that. I know a small town in Georgia with a lap pool, but it's 100 miles to a larger town. I grew up in sw florida and its changed a lot . We swam in the bays and canals and I still would if I lived ther full time. We eat alligators . I agree on the traffic. I like rural ohio better, we have huge indoor pools here . HA! Not where I'm from in Rural Ohio! Honestly FL may have its downfalls and I work outside so it's HOT! But you get used to it. I would rather be here than Ohio. I do miss some parts of there but I live rural here too but only 15 mins from town. If I want to go back home to Ohio etc, it's only a cheap hour flight away. Mostly I go to the mountains in GA now for a retreat. |

Besides, I saw and experienced Charley and every hurricane since. Charley came right up the river where my house is. I saw damage you couldn't believe. Trailers and houses were matchsticks. So many tornados from it. No way I would ever live in a trailer in places where that can be a yearly occurrence. It isn't about money. Trust me I'm broke. You can rent for less than all the hassle of a trailer now. Even buy a decent condo. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 81887851 United States 01/17/2022 09:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah. I’m in the cape and we just got a second emergency alert for Tornadoes until 9:30am. Quoting: DebISNT Looks like it hit Ft Myers the worst but it’s not over yet. The emergency alert says to leave mobile homes and cars and go to strong shelter or basements. There are no basements here! the mobile home areas here are massive. Many of them have nowhere to go. Unless they have opened some of the schools which I doubt. Do they still build houses of concrete block there? That should be pretty safe, might lose the roof but the walls would stand. |

Concrete block with every 4th cell a stick of rebar, tied to the footer, amd filled with concrete. Roofs all now have hurricane clips. Alot changed in the construction industry here after Andrew Mr Samuel Colt |

Alot changed in the construction industry here after Andrew When I was there in the 1980's it seemed the old cheap buildings were block and the newer ones were stickbuilt. I was thinking hurricane clips might still not be enough in a tornado which would slice thru the wood roof trusses, but at least the walls would stand. |
