They will eat the stuff they throw out in the produce section of your grocery store. Get to know the manager. They will save those scraps for you if you pick them up in a timely manner. And once in a while bring them some donuts for the break room.

Bugs grass and everything they can fine. The compost and worms get a lot if not all. They do get some table things. Fully free ranged. Zero feed at all.

from experience,its best to ho black,the hawks and owls will think they are crows.
yes yardbirds eat anything but you htave to have a hut to close up nightly and feed them at dusk to go in that hut.otherwise they will roost in trees.

Even the wild turkeys and critters come here for feed after 4 months of over 4ft of snow and sub 0 temps. LOL

It's called livestock Guardians. You don't have to have any of that that is a lie. I had hats over a hundred eggs this season have over seven children that feed on eggs probably 3 to 4 times a week I have 22 hens. Only eight are your old.

Very cool and important info op, how many acres of land are your 22 hens grazing? Are the acres irrigated? How much compost do you bring in? Annual rainfall average? Zero supplemental feed besides broken down compost?

20ac. About half pasture half woods.
Compost is a lot with 7 kids. But most all of it goes to worm towers and compost pile in garden. Garden is chicken free. Fenced. No chicken food at all. If they get anything it would be a fight with cows and sheep and turkeys. Turkeys are on no feed as well all the birds are. Arkansas if that helps on rain casus I am not sure. Maybe this helps.

There is another 16 ac they use in the winter.

I have three of them in my small flock, The Betties. Bettyann, Bettylou, and Bettypoop.

They are beautiful girls and they lay jumbo eggs. They are calm and quiet. I highly recommend this breed.

Rhode Island Reds do great with the desert heat. I always have had good luck with them, plus they are a friendly breed as well.
Plymouth Rock chicken is great as well.

Brahmas are just too damn big, but a great meat chicken.
