Captured Russian Drone Disassembled: Has Best Buy Camera and Hobby RC Parts
"Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has released a video in which a Ukrainian soldier disassembles a Russian military surveillance drone. The teardown revealed a remarkably rudimentary design that features a low-end Canon DSLR camera at its core."

Hahaha, watch that, they have a straight-up portrait camera inside.

It wouldn't suprise me in 90% of their ICBMs exploded on the launchpad.

Russia is run on corruption and graft, and their military is subservient to the Russian Mafia. When the Mafia shows up at their military bases, anything they want they are allowed to take.

I would honestly feel sorry for Russia, if they hadn't invaded Ukraine.

Yeah, lol, it does make sense!
(Ukraine crackling and burning in the background)

Russians make stuff that works in combat for a price that fits their budget instead of being concerned about enriching the MIC.

US leveled Iraq and still never beat the insurgency.

US spent 20 years in Afghanistan, never took the country and left in disgrace.

War isn't about trying to impress the Jones's, it's about destroying the enemy and Russia is doing that day in and day out.

Canon is top quality tho. :/

What are they supposed to make their own lenses in the drone factory?

It's a canon 800D. That was a top rated camera that cost about $1200. What else would you use in a cheap drone?

Make fun of Russia all you want, but that camera would smash the one in a DJI drone by 1,000X. Whatever works.

Let me put this straight:

In The U.S. they'll spend 50 million dollars developing a custom drone camera that matches that Canon, and then they'll cost $100,000 a pop.

By forgoing all that, Russia could make 100,000 drones and have them flying before America even paid for and finished the research phase, with zero produced. Who's tax dollars got spent better?

I'll clarify this even more: Private drone operators cannot afford drones that could ever put a camera like that in the air, such a camera is TOTALLY considered to be the "holy grail" in the private world.

That would not be possible. Even at 5 years old now you'd never bag that for less than $700 on Ebay. That camera got top honors at DP review and it is still new enough to be totally relevant

I don't see a problem here. This isn't some high altitude long range surveillance drone. It's a field drone that flies around looking for a target for the artillery guns a few miles away, and stuff like that.

If it works why not

Consumer cameras are very hires

Sure US military would spend $100k instead and get more capability

But this may work quite well for around $1k

Re: Captured Russian Drone Disassembled: Has Best Buy Camera and Hobby RC Parts
So?

Great camera AND they did NOT have to spend in the TENS of millions of dollars recreating the wheel that Cannon already spent TENS of millions of dollars creating. What's the problem ... you like those $20,000 toilet seats the US Air Force bought, or those $40,000 coffee pots they also bought?

You may not have noticed the news articles but there is a bunch of stuff on our newest Mars rover that uses consumer grade items. The microphones for "hearing" the sounds on Mars. The camera on the drone (and maybe even the cameras for the main unit - I forget). Bunches of stuff on that Mars probe ended up being Prosumer quality items.

There is NO NEED to recreate the wheel when you have a PROVEN and DURABLE product that has already been developed and you can just slap onto the rest of your creation. That is why the first copies of the Turkish attack drone only cost about $700,000 each to build. (which they sold for 1 million each - now price is up to 7 million each, but they are probably more capable).

Those drones are NOT meant to last 20 years. 4 weeks in combat is probably the most they can last ... 1 to 2 is a more probable lifespan expectation. Definitely NOT something you want to spend a million dollars a copy on ... unless you are the US which does that so as to enrich the Military/Industrial Complex.

Why spent millions when a hundred dollar drone does the same job?

Waging war cheaply will in the end determine the winner, because a massive financial disaster is looming.

Yup a $1200 DSLR essentially means Russian drones are insanely better at way more reasonable pricing...

Back in the 1960's, during the first manned space explorations by USA and Russia, USA spent millions of dollars inventing a pen that could be used in space. Russia used a pencil. Both had the same result.

Russia = smart saving money

USA = dumb wasting money

lol

When usa first world nation military with all the techs, could not beat afghans, who are goat herders, and never went to school.

Ukraine had one of biggest militaries in europe before this, and is being backed totally by nato.

Ukraine is run from tel aviv, london, and washington. Virtually no powerful people in ukraine, are actually ukrainian.

For past 8 years ukraine has been run from tel aviv, london, and washington.

Uk defence minister a few weeks back said, that uk military was training ukraine military since 2015.

That means ukraine were proper prepared for this, and had one of largest militaries in europe before this.

Stop pretending ukraine is something like san marino or ireland with no military.

Exactly.

Theres a video of a guy who tried to make a shoe similar to a nike basketball shoe from scratch. It was estimated that it would cost $75,000 to make a shoe that he could just buy for $50 already made from the store.

Why waste money when the job can be done alot cheaper and already made...

Obama got the Nobel peace prize for killing civilians with drones.

Liberals wet their pants with love for him for bombing brown people.
