Anonymous Coward User ID: 13342225 United States 04/29/2022 08:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I recently had 4 vertebre fused. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80451763 It was rough for a whole bit i am walking and up and about. I could barely walk with a 4 legged walker before the operation. I am by no means trying to dissuade people from getting necessary spinal fusions done, but I do want to touch on some of the issues that can come with them as an informative measure. The problems that can crop up with a fused spine is that the points above and below the fusion can begin to destabilize over time causing pinched nerves, ruptured disc, cracked vertebrae and sciatica, spinal shifting, headaches and bowel trouble, failed instrumentation, trouble balancing as well as odd or exaggerated gait, etc; in some cases, it will or is likely to only get worse as you age, depending on numerous factors involved. Every individual will experience differing outcomes and prognosis. For example, Try using the toilet when constipated, where your ass goes numb, and your legs begin to literally bounce up and down making your feet lift of the floor in an uncontrollable manner as you sit trying to take a dump. You can't. You have to stand back up and wait until you are no longer constipated. Spinal surgery is no picnic, after all, you are talking about the spine here, which is responsible for whole body support. The chances of needing more surgery to correct unforeseen latent issues has the potential to increase over time and physical therapy can be about as useful as attempting to fill a bathtub by carrying a 5 gallon bucket full of water 30 feet with a 2 inch hole in the bottom. It can frequently result in a no win situation for many spinal fusion sufferers who have undergone surgery even if it does improve quality of life over all had they not had it performed. In post op after my fusion, in intensive care, I coded and they almost lost me. (The pain from the procedure I had was so intense I stopped breathing and nearly died. I was 18.) Mine is fused at T11-L3. I have suffered with pain, sciatica, fractures and multiple other debilitating factors from it for a little over 30 years now. Daily life is a balancing act just trying to maintain some form of normality. I have a scar that runs from several inches below my left shoulder blade all the way down to my left groin a couple inches above my pubic bone. In total, the scar measures approximately 2 feet in length. My procedure is essentially the same as shown in (Fig. 155.7) to (Fig 155.12) at the link below. (Fig. 155.3) at the following link shows roughly what was done to me, albeit a bit more pronounced than shown in the drawing. Obviously there are people living with much worse than I have, comparably to them, my surgery was a walk in the park, but it isn't a picnic for any of us. It impacts life in a profound manner. Typically women represent the greater portion of the population for these types of condition over male individuals. With medical advances, most surgeries done today, like mine, are not as invasive as when I had mine done and recovery prognosis and stability impacting quality of life is far better today as a result. Anonymous Coward User ID: 13342225 United States 04/29/2022 09:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We feel your pain. My husband can stand for a little bit, then has to sit or lay down. Orr back pain is a life sucker. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71088931 I have the same troubles myself. It sucks. Most people don't understand. They frequently expect more than I am able to physically endure. If your husband is anything like me, the longer I am on my feet the more agony I am in. It's like winding a pocket watch to the point of breaking. There comes a point that if you can't lay down or recline, you will literally fall down due to the stress that is physically put upon the body. When that happens, isn't a luxury to lay down either. because all of that torsion and tension that builds is released slowly over a period of days or weeks and it leaves you feeling very tired, in pain and drained. It keeps you awake at all hours of the day or night until you fall into an exhausted and troubled sleep that never has a refreshing quality most people manage to achieve. I have pushed myself to the point where my legs have buckled because my back will no longer support them, trying to please other people in the past. It's no bueno. My back decides when I am done, not me. :jay: it sucks doesn't it? have you tried using a pool for exercise? Yes, it does help not having gravity effect you, It helps relive pressure, but there is only so much time you can devote to being in the water and not everyone has the luxury of being able to utilize such things on a consistent basis. I was on morphine for quite awhile for the pain, but I voluntarily went off of it. It was too toxic for me to continue. I get by with Tramadol and Cannabis, currently. It cuts the pain somewhat, but it's always present at a moderate level and increases with activity, or the obverse of that if I am to sedentary. Some days it is more difficult to manage than others, it's a balancing act. |

Quoting: *SaintIn 24 years ago, our 2nd son was 5 days old, when their dad accidentally stepped off a roof edge, fell to the ground on his back, busting vertebrae on the flagstones. At the ER last night, they started to railroad me to fast track surgery in the morning. One doctor said there was little choice as he did not think I could walk. I did not trust them, and over my wife's objections, signed myself out, put my clothes on and walked without assistance out of the hospital. Still carefully walking, standing, and sitting. Just hurts a bit. Seeing a orthopedic doctor I trust tomorrow to ask advice and recommendations. edit: I ordered a medical corset on amazonia. it will be here tonight. Sending positive vibes and thoughts. I believe in science NOT religion. Giving me bad karma for that, is anti-religious (you're passing judgement) I am just a man. Of no significance. Who found religion to be full of lies, and wrong doing, conflicted teachings I understand microwave communications. I do not stand for the NWO, it sucks. |

(OP) GOD User ID: 80330863 United States 05/07/2022 04:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | An update. My surgeon told me to go to the regional trauma unit. The trauma neurosurgeon said I was in no danger of failure, but there were several fractures on the spine processes and smaller ones on one side of the fusion. They admitted me and did more imaging and tests for 2 days, and sent me home with orders to pretty much don't do anything but sit and walk around the house for 3 weeks and then very light work until week 6. Then progress back to normal as long as I don't over stress it and consider healed by week 12. Standard bone healing for my age. No nerve damage. Thank God. I'll be back to (my) normal soon! In a nutshell, my late Husband messed up his back and had surgery. The surgery failed and the Dr. gave him a big bottle of Vicodins and sort of wished him luck! Husband got hooked and kept needing more for pain relief, ultimately died 6 yrs ago due to liver damage. He was not a drinker, but the pain meds ruined his liver. I’m not a fan of the medical world and have several family members that are Doctors & Nurses that follow the modern day conventional way. They annoy the crap out of me. Seriously rooting for healing for you! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 82624548 France 05/07/2022 10:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah, a bad back is pretty bad. Quoting: Housedad But for everyone that has one, including me, remember that as bad as it is, it could be worse. I could have been hurt way worse, with loss of use of legs or more. They still work and I can feel them and are not weak. In many ways thinking about it helps me to put it into a perspective and that gives comfort to keep going. Sort of a odd concept of Pollyanna's 'Glad Game" I always think of that scene in the movie when my back is hurting. Not going to compare myself with anyone here, but reading some of the comments above I see that there are others that are experiencing similar pain. After 15 years of this reality I have accepted that routine injections and pain meds will be a forever thing at least for me, how ever long that may be. If I may recommend Radio frequency Ablasion to some of you that haven't yet heard of this, it has been a life saver for me. I take 14 drugs a day not counting the extra drugs I can take as needed. I'm on 2 antidepressants to keep me happy and away from suicidal thoughts to end the pain. My doctor is trying to get me a spinal unit of local hospitals and the quickesr so far is July. MRI showed 3 tumors, bone spurs, and bulging disc which is causing the nerve issues I have. I also have a condition called DISH which is calcifying the ligaments, tendons, and nerves within my spine. I'm in my 70's and years of heavy work have caught up with me in a vengeance. I do have access to some heavy duty pain pills if needed, but taking them suck as they make me tired and walking like a zombie. If anyone had told me this is what my retirement was going to be like, I would have committed suicide 20 years ago.
