A lot of my old acquaintances are dying lately. A married couple, that I used to party with 40 or so years ago, passed within a week of each other. I have not seen either of them since 1987.

It makes me sad as they were good hearted people and I lost touch after moving away from the area where they lived.

People go on with life in different directions for many reasons. Those who are true friends don't have to stay attached at the hip to understand this. And when life allows or if an old friend is in your thoughts, you might make contact to catch up and see how they are doing on life's journey out of appreciation for who they are and the friendship once shared.

This is another example of worldviews from opposite ends of the spectrum: everyone is out for themselves (primitive predator view) vs people appreciate others (collaborative, appreciative, humanity view).
