Germany may reactivate coal power plants
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck will reportedly reveal an emergency decree allowing the federal government to bring back the coal-powered and oil-fired facilities in case of gas shortages.

The plan, which is expected to be announced on Tuesday, is aimed at reducing the risks of potential gas shortfalls if supplies from Russia are halted, Bloomberg reports citing the proposed legislation.

“This request for additional coal-fired power generation only occurs when there is a gas shortage, or if there is a threat of a gas shortage and the gas consumption in power generation has to be reduced,” the draft law seen by the agency reads.

Germany has nearly six gigawatts of facilities that are now part of a national reserve, many of which were supposed to be closed down by 2030 as part of the coal phase-out program.

“We must complete the phase-out of coal in Germany by 2030. This is more important than ever in the current crisis,” according to the decree.

Germans urged to cut back on hot showers to save gas
However, later it states, “On the way there, we have to strengthen our precautions and keep coal-fired power plants in the reserves for longer in the short term.”

The emergency plan would allow Berlin to activate the coal facilities without approval from parliament for up to six months. The plants will now be part of the reserve until March 31, 2024.

Earlier this month, German automotive giant Volkswagen admitted that coal would still be needed regardless of the EU’s plans to end reliance on Russian natural gas.

Meanwhile, German utilities said they could make plants available if needed. Uniper said it could dispatch as many as 3 gigawatts of coal power generation to strengthen security of supply, while RWE said it was reviewing which power plants could be turned back on.

Re: Germany may reactivate coal power plants
If the German government is contemplating this idea then it is a reality. You don't dust off old ideas unless they are needed. If the Germans don't start getting those plants operational right now it will be a very cold winter for their people. Pissed off voters do not play well in the voting booth and the German government has to get in front of this problem. But once spring is closet the plants will be shut back down, for the environment, ya know.

So rather than starve and freeze to death, they opted to increase global warming.

Global Warming would mean less freezing to death.

Interesting.

Temporary return of coal plants? That is going to cost an insane amount of money. Who the hell would want to do that without getting insane money? Come on back for 3 months then you are on your own. Plus there are very few trained on the plants now. It is going to take months to get it back on line. This is a big good luck with that... no way no how.

I don't see that you are correct.

Coal is cheap. The technology is simple. The power plants are in place.

Coal WAS cheap. The Green Monsters did one hell of a job of bankrupting mining companies and getting mines closed around the world. The only major buyer is China and they’ll not take LESS. Russian and Ukrainian coal is off the table for a moment. Supply is way down and prices are rising considerably as demand ticks up. Mines aren’t easy to restart and restart. It takes time.

Then what? How many companies are looking to invest on restarting mining operations (under all the new, costly, and prohibitive regulations) on a ‘temporary’ basis. It’s not like they’ll be viewed as ‘heroes’ after/if all of this calms down. Hell, look at what happened to the unvaxxed ‘essential workers.’

Re: Germany may reactivate coal power plants
No shortage of coal. Try to buy and restore old coal burning furnaces for your home like I have. It is now gas, but can use coal also. I even have a coal shoot through the basement window. Back in the day, I lived in a very huge apartment complex and I use to watch in amazement our German janitor with huge muscles, shovel the coal in it's mouth from a large coal pit. Heated the entire place just fine.

Germans are super gifted at coal technologies.

They can make it as clean as they want to spend money to achieve. Zero emission coal power is not that hard to accomplish. Just takes money.

It's called scrubber, not zero emission , takes sulphur and mercury out of smoke - primary problem of coal powerplants

Let's see

All the employees were laid off and retired or found new jobs

Much of the equipment was sold.

No coal is storage to burn. None on order.

It could take years to get these plants up and running!!
