They tried to clean this up by making mention of her "two dads" on the family's GoFundMe.

My guess is, the first "dad", Slowpoke Rodriguez, wasn't sufficiently selling the drama, so they replaced him with the backwards cap and sunglasses guy. When they got caught, the GFM went up with the half assed explanation.

The "grandmother" isn't much better. You'd think these people would have seen Broadcast News and figured out how to make it look like someone is or has been actually crying.
