It developed a leak and it would take ten bottles to fill. I would still have a thirty year old AC that still could develop another leak so I got a new AC. It's cool bro, it's cool. |

There are many variables involved here, but that's about ~$450 min for a recharge; however, that would indicate a leak somewhere usually. AC guy needs to grab his reclaimer and visit the junkyard. One could make a lot of money recharging off of "free"on. |

R-12 [link to www.refrigerantdepot.com (secure)] R-22 [link to www.refrigerantdepot.com (secure)] While R-12 AC systems stopped being produced around 1995-1996, R-22 AC systems were produced and sold up until 2019. People could have a 5 year old AC in their home or car that now has refrigerant that costs $1500 per cylinder. And that price is literally 85% "green" taxes. |

Quoting: Coastie Patriot wow!!! the new refrigerant wont work in old ac's Use Propane LPG. A/C refrigerants are a scam. Buy a set of gauges and do it yourself if you are cheap, and the system old. Same goes for automobiles. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 82400992 United States 06/09/2022 02:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's what I plan on doing to my old car that used R12. R12 cooled a bit better, but I don't think it's worth the cost for a small difference. Usually the o-rings an accumulator have to replaced to accommodate the smaller molecules of R134A, right? Is there more? I know you also have to purge and clean/flush the system. Does this work on residential/commercial AC systems? I don't see why it wouldn't. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 82437096 United States 06/09/2022 02:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | thanks for this info. I have a 1997 Trane. My situation is weird. 1960 house. 1500 sq foot ranch. It has radiant heat. I replaced the boiler about 6 years ago. Cost 6500 bucks. The central air was put in after the house was built. The compressor is up in the attic, and the vents are soft that run to the different rooms. About 5 years ago, I had to have a new compressor ordered that could fit up in the attic. cost about 1200 bucks. Ever since then, about ever two years i'm out of coolant. Two years ago I paid about 400 bucks to have it refilled. I know it's out now, but I havent' called about it. Looks like I might go without A/C this summer. Fucking Democrats. I'll probably have to blow 7K to replace it...if I can find a new system with an attic compressor. |

Quoting: Coastie Patriot wow!!! the new refrigerant wont work in old ac's I own a Toyota Landcruiser, FJ62, From 1988. It still has working Air Conditioning system, which blows out flawlessly cold air when its filled up. However, being 30+ years old, It has a slight leak. After its filled by a few fluid ounces the pressure of the refrigerant causes it to slowly leak out to a point where its no longer pressurized, Sadly and then it stops blowing cold air until its refilled with an ounce or so of R12. I am in Canada, and used to work at SSL, a HVAC Supplier. They had an old green tank of R12 sitting there, I simply drove in to the office (awhile after having quit the job.) and just asked one of the guys working who had known me, if he could fill it up with R12 for me, He did it for free. Anyway, I was wondering, How much is it going to cost me if I want to repeat this process, Can I just buy a can of R12 New-Old-Stock on EBay, or are those typical a scam? |

Check the compressor seals (front seal and case seals). Usually its the front seal that goes bad. Old age causes them to shrink and degrade. Its good to keep that type of collector vehicle in factory condition. I would try to find the leak and fill with R12 If you plan on keeping the vehicle and money is the main issue... just go ahead and convert to r134a |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79925363 United States 06/09/2022 03:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What's BS is many techs will try to sell you a new system because your unit uses the "phased out R22 refrigerant" when they can simply use RS-44b instead. Since it's against the law to make or import R22 refrigerant, the current supply is finite, so they try to scare the customer into thinking there will be no refrigerant available for their R22 system. Or they will try to use the more expensive R22 refrigerant instead of the less expensive RS-44b made in Texas refrigerant. I think RS-44b goes by RS-70 in Europe. |
